UPDATED! Eric's CD giveaways for the rest of his life
Most people know that I love giving music away, especially to those who really want to check out some new tunes, groups and releases, so here's what I'd like to do - I'll be giving a CD away every week, and I'll even cover the postage. No essay writing that make you and I appear to know everything about, no "Guess The Lyric," or "Who Am I?" Just a genre-busting, flawless, you must acquire this immediately kind of disc giveway. Watch this space, though, I think sometime soon I'll be doing daily giveaways.
The third batch of giveaways are finished, and the response has been amazing! So - let's keep it going!
ABOUT ERIC ALPER(Screeeeee! Fzzzzzzz! Craccccck!)
I am not used to routine, which is how I like it. As a weasel, a flak, an officer to the press, a director, a dictator, a Coke and Chips for breakfast, and dinner for lunch, I think I can be forgiven, by 10:00am, if I have felt I had too much to dream last night.
I am one of the lucky ones for sure – getting to do during the days (and nights and weekends) what I love to do: Be around passionate music lovers, fans, music industry folks (yeah, we’re still here…some of us!) talking about the newest album, the old record recently found in the basement or bargain bin, tragedy-tainted tales, and memories of old C-30, C-60, C-90s in our pockets. So, onto this bio… If I can borrow from Dylan, “I found myself writing this story, this long piece of vomit, about 20 pages long.” He was talking about Like A Rolling Stone, mind.
Battling against the over-exposed and the under-talented, I have handled the PR for Bob Geldof, Ringo Starr, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Sasha and Digweed, Sinead O'Connor, The Black Angels, JDiggz, Lisa Loeb, Natalie MacMaster, Rita MacNeil, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Blanks, Harry Shearer, Dan Zanes, Opeth, Cradle Of Filth, Slash, Carl Cox, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Snoop Dogg, Robert Munsch, Jeff Martin, J. Dilla, The Wiggles, Bill Wyman, Sly and Robbie, Steve Earle, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Kim Mitchell, Jim Jones, Adam Freeland and a thousand others. How fun is my job? How about going from a phone call about Jimmy Sommerville, Woody Guthrie and Jack DeJohnette to the next being about Sinead O'Connor, Pere Ubu, Howard Jones, The Wiggles and Public Enemy? Even though I am capable of single-handedley destroying a room with my own sense of singing, it makes good sense to incporate more talented people in my life, and thus, I work with them more than keeping my eye on my old Grammy Award possibility.
I’m also privy to an embarrassment of riches from our record labels, such as our own KOCH Entertainment, Bar-None, Black Hen, Bloodshot Records, Compendia, Courgette Records, Cumbancha, Decon, Defected Records, Denon Records, DPTV Media, DRG Music, Escapi Music Group, Escondida Records, Fatboy Records, Festival Five Records, Fifth Line Recordings, Good Charamel Records, Gotham, HBD Label Group Inc., Hi-Bias Records Inc., High Note Records, Hopeless Records, Image Entertainment, Kinkysweet Records, Light in the Attic, Lightyear Entertainment, Luprock Entertainment, Made Records, Maxamus Entertainment, Mobile Fidelity Inc., Mode, Nevada Entertainment, NRK Music, OM Records, Ondine, Putumayo World Music, Relapse Records, Revenant Records, Runt Distribution, Sailor's Grave Records, Savoy Jazz, Shanachie, Sheridan Square Records, Sidecho Media Inc, Smithsonian Folkways, Spitfire Records, Stones Throw, System Recordings/Double Blind, Taang! Records, Taxi Records, The Borealis Recording Co. Ltd., The Children's Group, The Disinformation Company, Thrive Records, Tzadik, Velour Recordings Inc, and lots lots more!

My Interests

Music - first and foremost...Along with being at KOCH Entertainment, I also do the club and concert listings for Jam Canoe (www.canoe.ca/Clive), the bestest site for Canadian music, if I may say so myself. Reading about music (both theory, like Everything You Wanted To Know About The Music Business) and practice (I'm Coming to Take You to Lunch: A Fantastic Tale of Boys, Booze and How Wham! Were Sold to China, by Simon Napier-Bell). Halfway through Freakonomics and just finished reading Blink. Also, just re-read 45 by Bill Drummond (The KLF ((uh-huh, uh-huh uh huh)) – tell me others I should check out and enjoy!A peek into any free time I do have is spent hunting down Essential Mixes from the BBC, and making Hannah laugh so hard milk comes out her nose.

I'd like to meet:

There are a few people growing up that I had hopes of meeting one day. Not exactly sure why, or under what circumstances, but just to a ‘thank you for the music’ as Chris Cummings would later sing. My artistic ideal to perfection that are no longer around would be Buddy Holly, Michael Hutchence, and Jeff Buckley, I guess, for what could have been a continuing love for their craft and downright legendary status as a pioneer, a rock god and a legend-to-be. You know who I’d really like to meet? My 8th grade typing teacher, an ex-Pittsburgh Pirates minor league catcher who really let me cheat throughout that term, knowing I was really typing with two fingers, memorizing the keyboard that still gets me by to this day. Thanks.

Music:

ooh boy...ok, here's what I would download if I only had a 4 MB iPod. Spirit Of Eden, Laughing Stock and The Color Of Spring/Talk Talk. Loveless/My Bloody Valentine, Love, Sgt. Peppers and Revolver/The Beatles, What’s Going On/Marvin Gaye, Who’s Next and Live At Leeds/The Who, Final Straw/Snow Patrol, Animals/Pink Floyd, Grace/Jeff Buckley, Stand/Sly and The Family Stone, The Road To Here/Little Big Town, Green/R.E.M. (but need to download Ignoreland, Begin The Begin, ok, it’s my list), The Bends/Radiohead, The Hurting and Songs From The Big Chair/Tears For Fears, Abacab/Genesis, Boys And Girls Of America/Hold Steady, Donuts/J Dilla, Renaissance/Sasha and Digweed, Gentleman/Afghan Whigs, The Stone Roses/The Stone Roses, some Charlatans singles (One To Another has to be there), Wilco, Portishead, DJ Shadow, Dylan, Outkast, Chemical Brothers, Missy, Primal Scream, Jesus and The Mary Chain, Sigur Ros, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Madvillain and Phil Collins. You laugh now, but wait – this will be the playlist on JACK FM in 2012.

Movies:

I’m not so sure I have a lot of time to sit for a movie these days – the Oscar noms are mostly about the amount I haven’t seen…but if Goodfellas, 24 Hour Party People, Pulp Ficton, The Shawshank Redemption, Apocalypse Now, Fields Of Dreams (yes, I cry like a wimp - he just wanted to play catch with his dad!) Network or Citizen Kane ever comes on the tube, I’m there. If you have a love of British humour, check out Extras, The Office and I'm Alan Partridge. And yeah, when WKRP gets released on DVD, I’ll be there, too.

Television:

forget TV - go to Facebook and find me :)
