Music - first and foremost...Along with being at KOCH Entertainment, I also do the club and concert listings for Jam Canoe (www.canoe.ca/Clive), the bestest site for Canadian music, if I may say so myself. Reading about music (both theory, like Everything You Wanted To Know About The Music Business) and practice (I'm Coming to Take You to Lunch: A Fantastic Tale of Boys, Booze and How Wham! Were Sold to China, by Simon Napier-Bell). Halfway through Freakonomics and just finished reading Blink. Also, just re-read 45 by Bill Drummond (The KLF ((uh-huh, uh-huh uh huh)) – tell me others I should check out and enjoy!A peek into any free time I do have is spent hunting down Essential Mixes from the BBC, and making Hannah laugh so hard milk comes out her nose.
There are a few people growing up that I had hopes of meeting one day. Not exactly sure why, or under what circumstances, but just to a ‘thank you for the music’ as Chris Cummings would later sing. My artistic ideal to perfection that are no longer around would be Buddy Holly, Michael Hutchence, and Jeff Buckley, I guess, for what could have been a continuing love for their craft and downright legendary status as a pioneer, a rock god and a legend-to-be. You know who I’d really like to meet? My 8th grade typing teacher, an ex-Pittsburgh Pirates minor league catcher who really let me cheat throughout that term, knowing I was really typing with two fingers, memorizing the keyboard that still gets me by to this day. Thanks.
ooh boy...ok, here's what I would download if I only had a 4 MB iPod. Spirit Of Eden, Laughing Stock and The Color Of Spring/Talk Talk. Loveless/My Bloody Valentine, Love, Sgt. Peppers and Revolver/The Beatles, What’s Going On/Marvin Gaye, Who’s Next and Live At Leeds/The Who, Final Straw/Snow Patrol, Animals/Pink Floyd, Grace/Jeff Buckley, Stand/Sly and The Family Stone, The Road To Here/Little Big Town, Green/R.E.M. (but need to download Ignoreland, Begin The Begin, ok, it’s my list), The Bends/Radiohead, The Hurting and Songs From The Big Chair/Tears For Fears, Abacab/Genesis, Boys And Girls Of America/Hold Steady, Donuts/J Dilla, Renaissance/Sasha and Digweed, Gentleman/Afghan Whigs, The Stone Roses/The Stone Roses, some Charlatans singles (One To Another has to be there), Wilco, Portishead, DJ Shadow, Dylan, Outkast, Chemical Brothers, Missy, Primal Scream, Jesus and The Mary Chain, Sigur Ros, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Madvillain and Phil Collins. You laugh now, but wait – this will be the playlist on JACK FM in 2012.
I’m not so sure I have a lot of time to sit for a movie these days – the Oscar noms are mostly about the amount I haven’t seen…but if Goodfellas, 24 Hour Party People, Pulp Ficton, The Shawshank Redemption, Apocalypse Now, Fields Of Dreams (yes, I cry like a wimp - he just wanted to play catch with his dad!) Network or Citizen Kane ever comes on the tube, I’m there. If you have a love of British humour, check out Extras, The Office and I'm Alan Partridge. And yeah, when WKRP gets released on DVD, I’ll be there, too.
