The band arose in 1996 and after having added a pianist to the line-up in 1999 they released the highly acclaimed demo-cd, Quadrology of Sorrow, in the following year. This demo landed them a deal with the American label Lost Disciple Records (rip) who released the debut album, Fragments of a Withered Dream, in 2003 unto an enthusiastic international metal scene. Besides from receiving great reviews (e.g. 13/15 in Legacy Magazine (D), 9/10 in Xtreem Music (E) and 5/6 in Danish Metal (DK)), the album was rated as the second best album that year at the Danish Metal Awards (DMeA) in competition with bands such as Mnemic, Invocator, Konkhra, Panzerchrist, etc.
However, Lost Disciple later decided to end all its activities which encouraged Compos Mentis to take matters in their own hands and record their second full-length album, Gehennesis, in the ZigZound studio. After having negotiated with a number of foreign record labels, Compos Mentis opted for the Danish label Mighty Music, which released Gehennesis in Denmark on the 26th of March -07 and worldwide on the 18th of June.
Gehennesis is a wordplay combining the words “Gehenna†(Hell) and “genesis†(creation) and it offers an ambitious concept, the themes of which are intervowen in both lyrics, music, and graphic. With a powerful production by Ziggy (Illdisposed, Mercenary) and Tue Madsen (Dark Tranquillity, Mnemic, The Haunted) the album offers loads of energy, fantastic melodies and a moving atmosphere, which is supported by the choir with 45 singers who participated on a couple of the tracks on the album.
With a new guitarist and a new pianist in the line-up Compos Mentis are stronger than ever, which will be confirmed in the rest of 2007 on the venues where the band can draw on their experience from a European tour with Danish legends Illdisposed and numerous shows with bands such as Mnemic (Nuclear Blast), Hatesphere (SPV), Mercenary (Century Media), The Arcane Order (Metal Blade), Withering Surface (rip), Exmortem (Earache), Saturnus (Firebox Records) and many more.
COMPOS MENTIS have been praised a lot for their live shows, among others by the Danish magazine Gaffa: Oh hell a great concert, and what a band! (...) A band just to my liking. Keep an eye on Compos Mentis, ladies and gentlemen! (5/6) (translated to English).

Metal Revolution
Throughout the whole release Gehennesis has everything a death metal record should have and a lot more to it. I expect great things from Compos Mentis.
Lunar Hypnosis
Fans of both melodic death and melodic black metal would be ripping themselves off by not seeking out this band. If you already know of their sound with FoaWD, than you should get this, pronto.
Rockfreaks
Gehennesis is an extremely well-composed piece of music that has had time to mature and develop. It is an album that must grow on the listener and as such an album that every band should aspire to create. It unveils new dimensions through multiple listens and refuses to become boring.
Nocturnal Horde
Fans of thought-through melodic atmospheric death metal with darker parts will go apeshit over this album, that's for sure!
