She has written scores for video - Didn't She Do Well by Valerie Walkerdine, about the loss of roots of academic working class women; Homebirth - Your Choice by Nicky Leap, about home birth. The BBC Singers performed Chant in Deploration of Nuclear Power at St. Johns Smith Square, broadcast on Radio 3. She has recorded her music and performed with an eclectic array of projects including her wild string/deck cacophony of a band Ragged Edges with Joe Townsend and DJ brother Emlyn Lamburn, Regular Music (Dance Piece, commissioned by the Royal Academy of Dance, and The Wake), Camberwell Now (Element Unknown co-write with Charles Hayward), Andrew Hugill's group George W Welch, Hot Club of Hackney Gypsy Orchestra, Shelleyan Orphan (signed with Rough Trade), experimental composer John Cage, Peter Greenaway, folk diva June Tabor, Mervyn Africa, John Stevens, Billy Jenkins...her influences are wide ranging - from the Notre Dame School to Jali Musa Jawara, French impressionist piano music to Hermeto Pascoal, Howard Skempton to Eastern European gypsy music. She worked with the Irish playwright Margaretta D'Arcy on an opera with whom she later set up a women's radio station and festival of music in Galway. In 1991 she was invited by Musicworks and Lambeth Council to coordinate a week of workshops celebrating International Womens Week.Commissions have included several for the contemporary music group Gemini (In the Name of Whom Do You Blather, As Many Women As Evolve - a joint commission with Leicester Phoenix Arts, Calling Kids and Cooching, 2 Welsh Folk Songs), Celebration for Women in Music in the Arts (Celebrate) first performed at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa - broadcast by Radio Canada. She was invited to submit a personal contribution for the Summer 1993 volume of Contemporary Music Review entitled Reclaiming the Muse, outlining the work of women composers. Other articles on her work are in The Dictionary of Women Composers (Macmillan), Women Composers: An Historical Anthology (G.K.Hall), International Who's Who in Music and Musicians' Directory, 15th edition (International Biographical Centre).Melanie Daiken describes Maria's music as 'striking in idiom, fluent in output...styles embrace the poetic concertpiece, the graphic score, the cinematic concept...her studies in controlled improvisation create very novel and expressive landscapes of behaviour. She has delved further into mordernist ventures (including random number and minimal ideas) - and indeed seems able to turn her hand to many projects: they have in common musicality, vision, and a strong voice (her tone is caustic, enigmatic and expressively surreal).'
