Richard Mailey was born in a small fishing village on the east coast of Ireland and ever since his introduction into that stimulating atmosphere, he naturally dreamed of being a fisherman. However these dreams were quickly shattered and he turned his attention to his grandfathers old banjo to find comfort. And comfort he found. Before long, at just age 14, he was touring the country with Marky Banjo and the 3 Ronnies, filling in for the third Ronnie who was confined to bed with a terrible case of the sniffles. But the banjo circuit proved to be a harsh mistress, and Richards touring days came to an abrupt end in a blaze of drugs and unsavoury antics. After spending 6 years in Captain John Hammonds rehabilitation clinic for banjo and flute players, Richard is now back and making music again, this time on what can only be described as a jumbo six string mega-banjo. He now lives in Glasgow, burying the memories that haunted him for so long firmly under Irish soil.So what's next for Mailey? Ever since his come back, the rumour mill has been churning like a giant mill that never stops churning. An album with baroque harpsichord wizard Matthew Smith could be on the cards according to one surprised fan. Others say that Richard is looking to team up with the strathclyde police to give talks to other banjo players about the dangers of prescription drugs, an increasing temptation for players on the circuit. The police have refused to comment on this. One things for sure though. Richard Mailey is back, and he's making music now that could rank as one of the top seven most creative and productive periods of his rollercoaster of a career. "Hop on loyal fans, it's gonna be a wild ride" said Richard in a recent revealing interview with police. "It's going to be banjo-tastic"(copyright 2007)
