Surgical ScalpelA scalpel is a very sharp knife, used in arts, crafts and surgery. The blades on scalpels are extremely sharp. Touching a medical scalpel with bare hands to test it will cut through the skin.
Scalpels are known to go all the way back to ancient Egyptian times, when they were used to make incisions as a part of the embalming process. They were also used to help with extracting teeth, and to drain abcesses. Evidence has been found to indicate that ancient Egyptians also experimented with brain surgery.
