I am a 2008 Graduate of Penn State University, with a degree in Music Performance (trombone)! I'm very proud of that...Don't get it twisted though, my degree may be a piece of paper that says I studied the trombone for 5 years, but in addition to that, the experiences, musically and otherwise, have made me more knowledgeable about many things and have allowed me to progress into a higher level of maturity and adulthood. I'm not saying I have all the answers, because I definitely don't! However, to me, the degree stands for my experiences of that chapter of my life. I am grateful for them.
I play the trombone, the most difficult of the band instruments, but whatever. I'm driven to make it sound great and to not be limited by the physicality of the instrument. I'm not going to BS you guys, it's one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with because you have a specific sound in your head and you want it to come out for the world to hear but it just doesn't happen that way! That's what keeps me going at it DAILY, I just want to sound good and be able to play whatever I can think of. As a jazz musician, I want to be one, bad mutha-- and have the respect of other musicians that know what real music, real jazz, is.
Early Beginnings...Looking at cartoons and my dad constantly playing ALL types of music made me love music. Listening to Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, thinking that this is the coolest man to ever live!, made me want to play jazz. BUT JJ Johnson...that man made me want to play the trombone! I would listen to JJ's Boneology over and over and over, thinking how could somebody play that fast on the trombone!!! Many people have made an impression on me in the field of jazz after that but that recording just does it for me...
