About Me

This site is meant as a tribute to one of the best and most underappreciated football players of our time- Chuck Cecil. Some stuff that was written about Chuck: My favorite free safety of all time — and perhaps the last of the true intimidators at the position — was the Packers’ Chuck Cecil, he of the perpetually bloody proboscis. Cecil played for some lousy Packer teams from 1988 to ’92. Fans in Green Bay could never count on those Packer teams to win games, but they could always count on Cecil to provide big hits and display an astounding disregard for his own body.Weighing in at a rather scrawny 188, Cecil was, pound for pound, the finest hitter I ever saw. Cecil, as I recall, was the first player ever to knock gargantuan Chief RB Christian Okoye out of action — with a deep thigh bruise, I believe. For a short time after his NFL debut, Okoye, nicknamed the "Nigerian Nightmare," was thought to be almost invincible. But that was P.C. — Pre-Chuck.Cecil had moved on to the Cardinals when he delivered the most violent hit I’ve ever seen. (Since I’ve only seen it on NFL Films, I’m not counting Eagle Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik’s famous knockout of Giant Hall of Famer Frank Gifford.) Cecil put a wicked, helmet-to-helmet shot on former Bear WR Anthony Morgan that had me fearing for Morgan’s life the moment after it happened. Morgan eventually recovered, and Cecil was fined for the hit. Oh, by the way, that hit came in a preseason game.If they ever put together a highlight reel of Cecil’s greatest hits, they’ll have to give it an R rating. My profile from the Titans Media Guide: Safeties and Nickelbacks Coach Chuck Cecil NFL Season: 4th Years With The Titans: 4 College: Arizona Known during his playing days as being a hard-hitter with the Green Bay Packers (1988-92), Phoenix Cardinals (1993) and Houston Oilers (1995), Chuck Cecil has brought that same mentality to the Titans safeties and nickelbacks for 2004. Cecil joined the Titans staff in 2001 as the defensive assistant coach. His entrance into coaching came after he spent two seasons (1999-2000) working as a television analyst for his alma mater, the University of Arizona. In his seven-year professional playing career, Cecil tallied 400 tackles and 16 interceptions in 95 career games. His best year came in 1992 after totaling 102 tackles and four interceptions. The year earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl. As a collegiate, Cecil was the former owner to the Pac-10 career interception record (21). He gained Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors his senior season, along with being named as a consensus All-American.Chuck and his wife Carrie reside in Nashville.
