This site is dedicated to those of us who love college football. We love tailgating, cheerleaders, the pigskin itself, kickoff weekend, bowl games, beer bongs, and even the sousaphone player who "dots the "I" for Ohio State. We love our college football tradtions like Keith Jackson, The Axe, The Big Game, Howard's Rock, The Civil War, The Lunch Pail, and the World's Largest Cocktail Party.
Mr. BCS’s OPINION STATEMENT
(Updated Feb 2008)
Yes, we all would like some sort of playoff system for big-time Division 1 Football. The reality is that it is probably not going to happen.
First, the BCS system consists of one part computer system, one part voodoo, and a large portion of an over-political Coaches poll. My gripe with the poll is that many coaches do not cast their own vote. They do not have the time to review tapes of other teams, so it is left up to a person in the Sports Information office. And, when weighing in on two teams you always see that this ballot will vote the team in their own conference higher than another. Sure, you could say that it is because that they know that team. The truth is that by voting a conference team higher you then increase you own Strength of Schedule index since you will most likely play that team/or have played that team during the season.
Currently it is the “Good Ol’ Boys†(GOBs) who run the college football bowl season. They consist of the Conference Commissioners, the Bowl Committees, and the major bowl sponsors (think Tostitos, Nokia, Citi, FedEx, Allstate). All have millions and millions of dollars on the line. Bigger, Better, Popular teams in your bowl mean simply bigger TV ratings which translates into more prestigue for the school, conference, bowl game, all while the sponsor jumps for joy. These GOBs are not going to do anything that may a) reduce cash flows, b) lower the prestige of the conference, or c) down play the Bowl Game itself.
Until Division-1 University Presidents and AD’s put FOOTBALL & STUDENT-ATHLETES ahead of the “revenue stream†we are stuck with the current bowl system. Again, everybody makes just too much CA$H the way it is now, so why rock the boat.
The BCS was basically set up to give the Conferences more leverage over the traditional big bowl games in a pathetic attempt to crown a #1 team. History shows this has not worked since the inception of the BCS.
Recent events look promising for some sort of change, if you are an optimist. The current BCS TV contract with FOX expires in 2011 (thank gawd, Fox’s broadcast of the BCS NCG have been horrible!). Some University Presidents are looking for change, we, the CFB fans want change. Formats such as the “Plus One†or a 4-Team playoff are bantered about on network TV, columns, and of course all over the internet.
My personal OPINION is that it will take a MIRACLE for something to change. It is my hope and desire that some sort of playoff or Plus-One system can be negotiated. Really, who did not want to see LSU play either USC or Georgia as the ‘final-final’ game?
