The twenty first century is upon us, and as the future takes control, many elements are being fused together that used to stand as solo components. Robots are banging their swords together to create a new group of elements; a new sound. A warrior steps forward. Dressed in black and camouflage and armed with a record case of many genres, Sykophiend’s main focus is to open the eyes of the blind.
Originally motivated by the sounds of drum ‘n bass, Sykophiend began writing for the now-defunct Ravesource.com in 2000. As he worked alongside owner, Mike Havok (Synergy Productions NYC), the novice solidified his writing skills and interview techniques while building an impressive list of artist features. Some of his first-year highlights included Delta 9, Submerge 101, Headroom (Sweden), DJ Odi, Datcyde and Eye-D (Netherlands). As his style improved and creative control fell into his hands, Sykophiend moved on to create Global Sound Philosophy Magazine and GSP Entertainment alongside Kentucky’s Matt “Alien†White. He has since gone on to help out some of drum ‘n bass’ top companies and artists including Taciturn Records, Sublunary Artist Management, DJ Starscream AKA #0 of Slipknot, Miss Represent, :Scene: Networks, Disturbed Recordings, Gasm Recordings, Soundz Devious Recordings, Blu Saphir Recordings, Bassline Magazine, Rinse Mag, dogsonacid.com and many more.
But writing about the action wasn’t nearly as exciting as being part of it and, in 2004, Sykophiend picked up his first pair of turntables. After many long hours of practice, this mad junglist was ready to play to the masses, and play to the masses he did. On April 9, 2005, Sykophiend got his first taste of the big stage when he shared the bill with a superstar list of worldwide talent, including Dione, Omar Santana, Delirium, Angel Alanis and many of Southern California’s finest DJs.
Many would describe this set as “unforgettable.†With an energy that few can match, Sykophiend ripped through the harder edges of drum ‘n bass, throwing down a destructive line-up of metal remixes towards the crowd with razor-sharp intensity. Needless to say, the room was packed with an indescribable fervor and, by the end of this madman’s hour of chaos, the entire room had transformed into the demon hordes of Hades breeding a mosh pit that few raves can match. He has since gone on to play alongside the likes of E-Sassin, Silver, Nicolas Bennison and the Speaker Junkies.
Sykophiend’s booking schedule is already filling up for 2007, and with the turning of the new year, he brings with him a sound that few dare to challenge. Now spinning the likes of hardcore, gabber, drum ‘n bass and heavy metal, it’s one’s best guess to what he’ll throw down on any given night. From flying record fragments to banshee-like screams to mosh pits, this monster stops at nothing to entertain his crowd. Don’t believe the hype? I invite you to come to one of Sykophiend’s shows – Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!
