About Me

Janine Marshall is a Melbourne based singer/songwriter/guitarist/bass player (and a wiz in the kitchen). Born in 1967, she has been playing and writing and recording since childhood...having discovered the joys of her sister's double-tape-deck as a crude "multitrack" device back in the late 70's (really did sound like "Mr Whippy" with a blown speaker after 3 or 4 bounces!)
Musically.... have a listen....and make up your own mind. But then, that doesn't describe me much, huh?
So ok: I sing, i've played bass in a number of different bands over 18 ish years, i grew up with a guitar or 2 in the house since kindergarten, when cassette walkmans hit the market i thought they were the best thing ever, I've been collecting recording gear for eons...from reel to reels, 4 track portastudios, 8 track digital desks, there's never really an 'enough' point. I still need a better bass (on the shopping list!) , better condenser mics, a 32 hour day to fit my life into....
I record other people occaisionally and love arranging your standard 3 and a half minute tune. I'll take 'great feel' over 'technically perfect' most of the time. A great gig with a good rhythm section is just an awesome thing. I'm convinced i would have been a piano player if i had of hand one handy from a young age. I also paint, draw, design and rescue lost puppies (and then handball them to Mum and Dad).
Supporting gigs have included the likes of the the Cruel Sea (as a soloist), the Screaming Jets and the Angels (on bass and backing vocal duties), while Janine appears regularly on the Melbourne scene.
Well...as regularly as she can. Some of us mere mortals still have day-jobs, but that doesn't mean we don't love our music any less :)
2007 will be a year of 2 LP releases for Janine, the first of which ("Homeworks") is now available from CD Baby.com, and also at performances. The second (currently titled "Results May Vary"), an LP more than 2 years in production...(cuz i'm a tight-arse) which began with Mark Eden and finished with Richard Pleasance....awaites artwork...and replication....and a few pennies in the bank to do so :)
Mmmm "artwork"....yes,yes...top of my 'to do' list.
"HOMEWORKS" is now available from:

Band Members: Janine Marshall - guitar & vocals

Hmmm, unless we're talkin about recordings, then it's kinda electric and acoustic guit's, 4string bass, percussion, and feebly played keyboard... And then there's the more professional outtings...where you'll find LOTSA folks like Richard Pleasance, Mark Eden, Glen King, Barry Cockroft, Claire Jephson. Extra bods in the homestudio have included Neil Robertson, Paul Booth, Steve Vella...and the live dudes below:

Tim Downey - drums
Liz Frencham - upright bass
Alex Fricke - lapsteel
Kate Ryan - backing vocals

...amongst a smattering of other ring-ins...
Influences:
...And music / folks / things just i like:

Kate Bush,
Sheryl Crow,
Fleetwood Mac,
Martha Davis,
Carol King,
Ben Folds Five,
" I'll Find My Way Home" (Vangelis)
Motown
Rutger Gunnarsson
ABBA
Garbage
"Video Killed the Radio Star" (The Buggles)
Queen
...oh! I was just thinking about "Bicycle Race". HOW much FUN is that track? Give me MORE vocals, MORE bells. One of the best examples of rock-pop. "Grace Kelly" by Mika ain't bad either (there's nothin' wrong with happy music people)
Muse
Yes
Ben Harper
Joss Stone

William Shatner
Dudley Moore
Howard Bloom
Billy Connelly

Oh! And i really gotta give a big nod to radio 3PBS, fantastic way to get a musical education.
Sounds Like: "Depends on the song"

Once upon a time someone said "you could put yr songs next to Sheryl Crow's and it wouldn't feel outta place"
I've heard 'rock' i've heard 'folk' (frankly, just because you play a song on an acoustic guitar doesn't make it FOLK)
"Flat On My Face" has a little bit of a Kate Bush thang, another song is a little Lenny Kravitz, I've been told "3 Rooms" has a Beatle-ness. I'm not REALLY chasing any one thing...except a sense of decent song-craft i guess. Mail an opinion if u got one.

"The Bonus Track"

It was 1999, and on the end of a classical recording i'd done for a girlfriend's trio i shyly stuck the 1st version of this track. Hence the name. Which isn't great, but for all this time it's obviou...

And Far Away

So here's a guitar-laden instrumental...it's not 'finished', but with a bit of tinkering/re-tracking it'll get there. One of the few tracks i've written with open tuning...playing dangerously by tuni...

"Falanges"

Or should that be "Phalanges"....a word related to "phalanx". For my song title it refers to the fingers, but it also meant a battle formation where ancient (eg) Greek soldiers would stand behind a w...

13 Degrees In Melbourne

And rain. And sunshine. And then the sun set rather early. All a good excuse to rug up on the couch and watch a movie or 2 ...or else brave the elements and head out to another open mic session. Thoug...

Burn, Baby, Burn

There was a documentary on the ABC last night about Americans (not all, of course, but a lot) who choose to drive Hummers (a rediculously large car/truck for the suburbs) and other SUV's ('sports util...
