RESPECT THE JUX
Jux/jooks/ 1. to rob an individual by studying their everyday movement.
CAT arrived in New York City when he was just sixteen years old. His mother had already been living in the states and she wanted Cat and his two sisters to emigrate from Jamaica. Little did she know that by age of eight, he was already snatching purses, shoplifting, and climbing through open windows. By age of fifteen when she sent for him, he had already committed his first jux and murder. After graduating from high school, he completed a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. Those four years of combat and weapons training would become useful. Returning to a poor job market, he worked at a supermarket for minimum wage while living with his mother. The family struggled he felt the American dream had failed him. In despair, he instinctively committed his first Jux in the U.S. After several successful runs on his own, he decided to expand his one-man operation by forming an Order Of Thieves, a secret society of seven professional thieves. Not the kind you would see in a Hollywood movie swinging down elevator shafts, or bypassing the worlds most sophisticated security systems to retrieve the rarest of diamonds. They specialized in robbing drug dealers and illegal businesses. First there was Banit, who in turn recruited Cloud, Ozzie, Prince, and James. With the team completed, they became an efficient juxing machine raking in multi-million dollars apiece. Inevitably all good things come to an end. An investigation by the NYPD for a double homicide forced the Order to cease operations. With the Feds hot on their trail, the team disbursed. Reaching for higher stakes, Cat moved to Miami, immersing himself in the South Beach party scene where he scouted for higher stakes - politicians, athletes, drug kingpins, and celebrities - no one was safe. Eventually no matter your level of accomplishment, you had to respect the jux.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: YELLO
Ive always wanted to write a book about the whole concept of the Jux, but it just seemed so overwhelming that I could never totally dedicate myself to it, explains Yello from his cell in the state prison where he is serving a fourteen year sentence.
Confinement can motivate you in so many ways. For some their world revolves around cigarettes, weightlifting, and writing letters to maintain a semblance of contact with the outside world. Others internalize, reflect, become religious, or rap against the beat of rhythms pounded against the wall of their cell. And then there are others who study and hit the law library looking for a loophole to get them out of captivity. But for Yello, it was the simple black letters on white pages that moved him mentally out of his prison. I passed time reading everything I could get my hands on, he explains. It was my second denial for parole that drove me to start writing, thinking it would be a better use of my time. On an even deeper level, I now believe God (or whatever name you choose to use) had a hand in denying my release.
The avid reader became a writer and from his reflections came the book you are holding in your hands, Respect The Jux. We never sleep sound in prison. Our thoughts keep us awake and sometimes I was close enough to a pad, toilet paper, a paper bag to write them down. There was no book signing or reading at some swanky bookstore to celebrate the completion of this book, Yello passed around what was then just papers to fellow inmates and needless to say, their reactions inspired him to write more. Originally I planned to write a total of ten books and within a year I went beyond my goal and wrote twenty. Me a writer, I never would have thought.
Respect The Jux is Yellos first published novel, inspired from recollections of his life. Born from humble beginnings in the most violent area of Jamaica West Indies, Dadz (Dodz), later known on the streets as Yello, witnessed the murder of his father by military officers. He immigrated to the United States at the age of eight and by thirteen was living on his own. He learned the first code of the streets quickly hustle or be hustled and got involved in the drug game in the 80s. His name become known, respected, and feared in Lefrak City, Queens (N.Y.) where he based his multi-million dollar operation.
In the 90s, he switched his game to taking money instead of hustling for it. He was a natural and found it much easier to get what he wanted by way of the gun. Ultimately, one too many Jux was the cause of his downfall. Arrested and charged with murder, robbery, and assault, Dadz stayed true to the second code of the streets never snitch and decided to take the weight for his whole team. His codefendants were free to walk and he took a plea bargain and received a fourteen year sentence in state prison, where he is currently serving his time.
Dadz is able capture the essence of the streets in his writing because he actually lived it. He is a writer, not a story teller. His books capture an audience that consist of young adults, and adults who normally wouldnt pick up a book and read. His words paint pictures that are more chilling and gripping line by line than any verse in a rap song. Contrary to what some may think, this is not a manual on how to pull of a jux. It was not written to glamorize criminal activity. It is a true fictional account thats intended for as much entertainment as you would get in a Quentin Tarantinos movie, with one exception. It is not a movie, at least not yet.
