Some may be living their life like it’s golden but Mauikai is pure gold, literally. Born to a Jewish father and Cuban mother, she was an only child that thrived for the center of attention that came only with a stage, a spotlight and a microphone. She discovered her talent and passion for the performance at the tender age of 4 during a cruise vacation where she did a full rendition of Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation. By the time she turned 13, Mauikai found herself sneaking into late night clubs, along with her very supportive mother, to quench her thirst of dancing to salsa music after being inspired by the movie Dance With Me. But she soon tired of professional dancing, and decided to pursue her dream within music.
Mauikai moved to Orlando to attend Full Sail. This led her to a weekly open mic night held at the historic Will’s Pub in Orlando called Vocalization. It was being hosted by none other than the Sol.illaquists of Sound. Mauikai formed a strong family bond with the Solilla clan and decided to move in with them. A hurricane would soon force her to leave and find herself. Traveling from Miami to New York, she worked at a television station, Telemundo in its Latin Urban division mun2 Television, a bicultural and bilingual version of MTV. She had an internship as Point Supervisor of the four month program. The station soon up and moved to California to re-brand and she moved to New York to work at Sean “Puff Daddy†Combs’ production studio, Daddy’s House.
After nearly a year of hard work, Mauikai left Daddy’s House when she realized that she was the only one who had a love for real music and had to be surrounded by people who felt the same. Moving back to Orlando guided her to recording her debut album “Auto-Tuneless Life Formations†with producer Swamburger and eventually putting herself on tour with former Ninja Tune Recording Artists One Self. With a voice smoother than velvet and a stage presence that captivates audiences everywhere, she is a force to be reckoned with.
Before touring the US with DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo and BluRum13 of One Self on their Organically Grown 2006 Tour, Mauikai could be found rocking microphones at spots like NYC’s most notorious and longest running weekly open mic: End of the Weak, the Nuyorican Poets Café, touring independently with 15 other artists on the 2004 Bridging The Gap Tour in Chicago, Orlando’s very own Sunday night open mics at AKA Lounge, opening for her mentors the Sol.iLLaquists of Sound, and collaborating on projects such as X:144 and SPS’ debut national release “M.E.†and S.K.I.P.’s digitally released “What They Never Told Youâ€.
