**************************************Martin de Waal: From Artist to Jury Member in
F.A.B.S.: Search For A Video ModelMartin C. de Waal had a face reconstruction, but
“I’m no Michael Jackson!â€Martin C. de Waal is a pop musician. But also an
artist. And photographer. And VJ. To top it all off,
this creative all-rounder is making his television
debut as jury member on the new TV series F.A.B.S.:
Search For A Video Model. In the show, Jorinde Moll
leads the search for girls who can dance, sing and, of
course, look great. “Maybe I’ll finally get some
recognition in my own country!†the artist jokes.Currently, his most recent art project, In Your Face,
a film about plastic surgery, is being shown in the
Vegas Gallery in London (until 7 October
www.vegasgallery.co.uk). The lead role is played by de
Waal himself - which is no surprise. In the film, he
undergoes an 8-hour long operation on his face. Even
though it was recorded several months ago, his face
still resembles a basketball. A blue, yellow and
purple basketball, that is. “During the first
operation, I had a facial transformation, but since
then I’ve been back under the knife,†de Waal
clarifies. “I wanted my eyes to be 25% Japanese. A
Neanderthal forehead wouldn’t have matched, of course,
so I had my skull moved back a bit. After a couple of
months, I was still not satisfied. So I had some final
adjustments made last week. Dotting the i’s, as it
were.â€Artist
The operations were not a result of an artistic need
to create, but of a personal desire. “The film I had
made of it did root from artistic necessity. Look,
you’re either an artist or your not. I tried to
shorten the film to a TV documentary format, but I
dropped that idea. It would have lost its
exquisiteness and run the risk of coming across just
plain freaky. And I’m no Michael Jackson!â€Abroad, de Waal is also creating a stir, but under the
name Duvall. “My name was always getting bastardized
anyway, and this seemed the easiest solution.â€
According to the artist, he was not invited to be a
jury member of F.A.B.S. because of his most recent
artistic operation, but because of earlier projects.
“In the past, I’ve directed music videos and
commercials. In the Netherlands, I was the first to
have a bunch of ugly pimply gabbers lip sync under
water: an utterly vile fashion statement. I dare to do
what others cannot. My only stipulation was that I
could be myself in the show. That was accepted. It all
seems pretty OK, but TV people are still quite scary.
Television producers always think in a certain format
and you have to fit into that format. In my case, they
know better, and so, of course, I’m left totally free
in what I say!â€mspmb allowScriptAccess="never" src="http://lads.myspace.com/slides/photoslider.swf?u=800507
