BIOGRAPHY
Ras NEGUS was born in Kingston Jamaica. As a young man Martin sang in church under the guidance of his mother. In 1977 he sung at the ‘All School Musical Fiesta’ held at the National Stadium in Kingston. He attended Kingston College and was a member of the Chapel Choir, he graduated from Kingston College in 1984. Even though he studied faithfully he could not have a blind eye to the deep political issues growing in his country.
Martin grew up in Whithfield Town, Kingston 13, one of the roughest parts of Kingston, the deep political issues directly affected his life. It is from this perspective which inspired the majority of his lyrics. In 1983, Martin went into the dancehall. With mentors like Dennis Brown, Philip Frasier, Michael Prophet, Michael Palmer, Half Pint, Junior Reid, Sugar Minott, and Tenor Saw he had the musical enlightenment and guidance he needed. He was given the stage name "Steve Martin", by DJ Joe Mannix who introduced him to Muzik Merchant Sound were he sung with Red Dragon and Sanchez. Next he linked up with Stereo One Sound with Lt. Stichie and Wolf Man. In 1986 he performed in Bermuda on an International Tour with DJ Rupie Culture and Jockie-Nock-Shot (High Plains Drifter) along with Producer Donavon McKoy. He then went on to America where his family had recently moved.
Hard work in a new country led him away from the studio, but this work acted as a foundation for writing songs and creating dozens of rhythms. In 1995 Martin founded Base 13 Productions with help from friends in Kingston Jamaica. He then took the name Ras NEGUS. He realized the importance of knowing all aspects of the music business. Ras Negus holds the title as Singer and Producer having the experience of many elders in the foundation of Reggae music. This together with the wisdom and knowledge of Rastafarian faith is the key to this successful marriage.
His first single, 'Break Down Barriers' was recorded in 1995 at King Jammys Studio, Firehouse Kingston. This song has great meaning for Ras NEGUS as the song insinuates that all obstacles in life should be trampled to uphold what is truly and morally correct. Thru Rastafari Ras Negus has grown to know that there should be no barriers between race, color, or social class.
Ras NEGUS linked up with Jah Kettle in 1999 and did his first combination song ‘Who’s Gonna Be My Empress’ at Junior Reid’s One Blood Studio in Kingston, Jamaica.
His single ‘Be Or Be Not’ was recorded at Ed Robinson’s Tiftam Production and Studio, Brooklyn, NY. After a few additional recordings 'Break Down Barriers' the CD, was ready for release in November 2002.
Ras NEGUS was once again in the studio recording his 2nd CD entitled 'Conquer' with the title track of the same name. This song was recorded with Derrick Barnett at OBI 2 Studio, Brooklyn, NY . Three additional recordings including a remix with Jah Kettle recorded in Kingston, Jamaica and a recording with Terry Ganzie sums up the total 14 tracks on this CD. 'Conquer' was soon set to be released. Ras NEGUS highlight performances that year included: Everton Blender's Annual show on November 29, 2003 and MAGNUM STING 2003 on December 26, 2003.
By now a solid foundation was being built for Ras NEGUS with the release of the video 'Who's Gonna Be My Empress (remix)'. This video premiered in Jamaica on D&L Cable, Channel 30 television Thursday, February 5, 2004.
Vital Dub band compliments Ras NEGUS strong lyrical skills and is a strong backing band for Ras NEGUS' strong performance. Ras NEGUS returned to studio again in 2005 to work on 'Never Simply Stated' This will be Ras NEGUS's 3rd CD and is still in production at this time. In 2006 The song entitled "Loving Feeling" was recorded with Gogan Productions in Portmore Jamaica. The video was filmed on location in Maypen, Jamaica and completely brings this song to life.
Ras NEGUS has a strong, cultural and incentive voice. His determination provides a solid foundation to his timeless lyrics.
