Ayyuka

The roots of AYYUKA started in high school when guitarist ozgur yilmaz and bass player altan sebuktekin came together and started improvizing (strongly influenced by the red hot chili peppers). The next step in the development of Ayyuka occured at eskisehir university when guitarist ahmet kul and drummer alican tezer joined. The group played covers and continued improvising, and they started calling themselves AYYUKA. (The word ayyuka has two very different meanings: to the highest part of the sky and to tell that a secret has been revealed (an idiom); both meanings describe Ayyukas music perfectly). // "Jay Dobis"...................................................... ............................................................ ......................................................... More importantly, some of the clubs in the city opened their doors to new musicians making their own music, which is quite precious when compared to Istanbul’s pubs where bands are often asked to play cover versions.Thankfully, there is an exception to that, as Peyote in Taksim district has become a haven for Istanbul’s indie bands. Breeding some of the country’s biggest alternative names such as Mor ve Ötesi, Replikas, Baba Zula in its first years in the late 1990s, the club was later closed down. When it reopened after a few years, it single-handedly provided the indie scene for Istanbul. Voyage to the limits of the sky with Ayyuka;Alican Tezer (drums), Altan Sebüktekin (bass), Ahmet Kul (guitar), Özgür Yilmaz (vocal, guitar) started playing together as Ayyuka in Eskisehir in 2001.The band obtained a considerable number of fans through gigs in festivals like Rock istanbul 2005, Rock N Coke 2007 and opening for Sonic Youth and Jonathan richman.Ayyuka added a quite successful cover of "Ãœmitsiz Ask" by Orhan Gencebay in the album. Besides, their own songs like Takinak, Unutursam, Havada Bir Hinlik Var, Aksi attract listeners’ attention.The band’s name covers what Ayyuka really is. Identical to meanings like the revelation of a mystery or elevation to the highest point of the sky, Ayyuka patiently spins all the yarns of its name and connotations. Various types of music such as Anatolian rock, arabesque, punk, surf, psychedelic rock, funk are all melt together meticulously by Ayyuka. Ayyuka’s music is not just a simple extension of Western music or a genre easily blended with local motives.
