This new band by pianist and composer Emanuel Ruffler is aptly titled “Rocketâ€. From the way she takes off, and shoots straight for outer space. Driving grooves, spacy textures and high-flying solos are the building blocks of this new formation, picking up where the great jazz-fusion bands of the 70s and 80s left off.Peter Watrous, in a review for the New York Times, describes Rufflers music: â€...several of his tunes use repeating bass and piano figures to order themselves. He spreads a tablecloth of a melody over the background, separating the instruments, and he lets polyphony break out...â€Setting up a maze of keyboards, cables and effect boxes, cymbals, drums and mellow brass, its sonic textures give Rocket a uniquenes. Riffs and compositions give way to extended jams and hypnotic grooves. Rocket features expressive instrumentalists from the New York scene: trumpet sensation Duane Eubanks has been noted for his work in the Grammy winning Dave Holland Big Band. Also featured is drummer Jaz Sawyer, known for providing backing for the likes of Wynton Marsalis was last seen with Abbey Lincoln. Nic Thys on bass and Kahlil Kwame Bell on percussion complete the ensemble.rufftone entertainment, 517 E 12th St, New York, NY 10009, tel: 609-213-8822 [email protected]
