On his new album «masquerade», COAL reveals a number of new and different faces. With his heart truly on his tongue, the talented singer-songwriter sets out to lay bare today’s cosmetic society, botox smiles and dilettante masks. “Everybody‘s got several faces“, he says.
Still only 25 years old, COAL has found a new maturity on this, his third album. The Swiss troubadour shows a level of depth and confidence, which far outweighs his age, as he steps out of his comfort zone and skillfully blends a mix of musical styles that a veteran would be proud of. If, with his first album, «Working Man» he could still use the bonus of naïve charm and with its successor «Let’s Build Us A Rocket» draw on the bonus of youth; the third is a more serious affair and looks at the world through the eyes of someone who has taken the time to live, love, laugh and learn. You can soon tell that COAL has given his all to ensure that this CD will surpass«Let’s Build Us A Rocket» (which Radio DRS 3 chose as its 2005 album of the year).
COAL is authentic and honest. A true singer-songwriter, searching for sense and nonsense, he poses hard questions — but without forcing his opinion on the listener or playing the Preacher. The songs on masquerade are as exciting and colorful as Fasnacht (carnival) in Switzerland, as secretive and subtle as the Harlequin mask-wearers in St Mark‘s Square in Venice, as wildly animated and unbounded as Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and as life affirming and indefatigable as Mardi Gras in hurricane-torn New Orleans.
Once the masks come off, the revellers fall silent and there‘s nothing left to hide …
