Tunesha Crispell has been blessed with a voice that transcends the barriers of time and tradition. Known as the “lady with a voice like light†the mere sound of her voice brings the illumination of Christ to all that listens. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Tunesha grew up in a household where music was considered a second language. With both parents being ardent lovers of music, it was only natural that she would inherit their love. “Music comes from both sides of my family,†states Tunesha. “My mom sang with various gospel groups and my father was a secular artist from the 70’s into the 90’s. Till this day, if you pass either of them a microphone, they’ll show you what’s up".
Tunesha’s extensive resume includes Stellar Award nominated projects with renown singer James Hall. Her distinct sound was featured in such hit songs as “God Specializesâ€, “Sweet Jesus Boy†and “Anything But Failâ€. It was while working with James that Tunesha realized that it was time to pursue a solo career. “I was comfortable being in the background, kind of blending in, but my experience with James Hall showed me that God had not called me to blend in, but to be different. He instilled in me the confidence to go forward in what He was calling me to do".
With a voice unlike any other in the gospel industry today, Tunesha Crispell is expanding the way gospel music is viewed and will undeniably open doors for an emerging generation of gospel artists who are comfortable with the uniqueness of their talent. “I believe God has given me a unique sound, one that hasn’t been heard in Gospel music†declares Tunesha. “There’s a rich, smooth simplicity in my voice that makes it enjoyable, but it’s the anointing that makes it powerful. Without God, it’s just another voice".
Noting such artistic influences as Tramaine Hawkins, Lalah Hathaway, Ella Fitzgerald and Chaka Khan, Tunesha’s first solos effort, Just as I Am offers a unique brand of gospel music, fusing the fundamental elements of gospel and jazz, making this a project that all generations can enjoy. The first single, “Holy†which happens to be Tunesha’s favorite, was birthed while enjoying a second honeymoon with her husband, acclaimed Gospel songwriter and producer Melvin Crispell. “While riding our mopeds in the valley of the mountains of Hawaii, admiring the beautiful scenery of nature, all we could do is look around and say, Wow, look at what our God created.†Inspired by this, my husband wrote the song “Holyâ€.
Having touched the hearts of many both at home and abroad, Tunesha Crispell’s ministry of song has earned her recognition as a trailblazer, whose voice shines like a light penetrating darkness. A light that shall continue to shine.
