About Me

I just moved back to the US after living/teaching/studying abroad for the last five years. It's been interesting to say the least. I've made my home in Long Beach, California where I currently work a ton of hours teachings relatively lovely children.Looks like I'll be moving to the mountains of Idyllwild in the fall though where I'll be teaching ESL to incredibly gifted musicians and artists from around the world. Not bad, eh?!I'll also be getting married this summer and I'm over the moon about that! Going through the immigration process...not so much. My man and our cats will be arriving along with our belongings over the next two to three months.

My Interests

Watching the horror unfold in America from afar and now up close. I'm addicted to progressive media websites, particularly Democracy Now!, Truthdig.com and Salon.com (Thanks Corey!). Now that I have a bit of time, I've begun studying Mandarin again. I amazed how quickly it all comes back! I also love film and books-quelle suprise!

I'd like to meet:

Anyone up for stimulating conversation about books, film, travel, etc. Oh, a good laugh never hurt either. Biting sarcasm and witty quips are always welcome! Running into old friends and acquaintances can be fun too.

Music:

Oh, where do I begin...Arcade Fire, Amy Winehouse, Bjork, Tokyo Police Club, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Joanna Newsom, TV on the Radio, Camera Obscura, Love is All, Morrissey, Kate Bush, New Order, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie, Micah Hinson, Camera Obscura, The Clash, Le Tigre, Bjork, Kings of Convenience, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Angie Stone, David Bowie, Broadcast, Blonde Redhead, Flaming Lips, death cab for cutie, the killers, the futureheads, franz ferdinand

Movies:

Control Room, Pans Labyrinth, Wizard of Oz (and subsequently anything with Judy Garland), Capote, Tstosi, Dancer in the Dark, Screaming Masterpiece (great film about the music scene in Iceland that isn't just about Bjork!),the big lebowski, 2046 (hasn't even been released in the states yet-when it opens, get yer ass to the theater!), in the mood for love, tommy boy, office space, harold & maude, the wizard of oz, little women (the one with janet leigh & elizabeth taylor of course!), bowling for columbine, the big one (thanks for showing me that one corey!), amelie

Television:

I haven't watched much since I left the US, except for the shows that have been released on dvd: sex and the city, 6 feet under, the office. More recently I've enjoyed Curb Your Enthusiasm very much. There are few good political shows here in the UK, but nothing as good as The Daily Show! I enjoy all the clips I find thoroughly. I can't wait to see the Bill Maher show! Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares! Fuck me, he's cool!

Books:

Too many to mention! Overthrow, The Constant Gardener, Fear of Flying, Adrian Mole books,The Secret History (Don't read Donna Tart's follow-up though), anything by Isabelle Allende, Fast Food Nation, The Culture of Fear, Waiting, Nickel and Dimed, anything by John Irving, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, anything by Maya Angelou, Vernon God Little, Douglad Coupland's stuff, brick lane, The Autograph Man, Jeffrey Eugenides work. Ok, I'll stop now. Oh wait, I love Gore Vidal and Christian Parenti (but he needs an editor!)

Heroes:

Kate Bush, Bob Dylan, my old violin teacher (she didn't take any shit), Christian Parenti, Amy Goodman, Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, Bill Maher, Robert Fisk-This man should be everyone's hero right now, as he's spreading the word about what's REALLY been going on in the Middle East
