Elvis Presley & The Blue Moon Boys

About Me

On July 5, 1954 Elvis Presley & The Blue Moon Boys did their first recordings. Lead guitarist Scotty Moore and producer Sam Philips were friends. Philips once told Scotty that if he could find a white man with “the Negro sound, and feel” he could make a million dollars. One day a truck driver named Elvis Presley showed up at Sun Records to record some demos. Sam saw something in him, and hooked him up with Scotty and bass player Bill Black. There was no need for a drummer thanks to Bill slapping so hard on his bass that it often sounded like drums. During a session that wasn’t getting anywhere Elvis randomly launched into Arthur Big Boy Crudup’s “That’s All Right Mama.” As a follow up Elvis and the boys launched into an upbeat version of Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon Of Kentucky,” They became a local success around the south playing everywhere they could. By 1955 Elvis was too big for the south. By 1956 he was signed to RCA where the boys became nothing more then sidemen and though still great material, it lacked the raw power of the Sun records.
