A poem and salute by some one known as getsbetter at allpoetry.com
Very Fragile
A soldier folds a flag and then another,
for his comrades or possibly his brother.
They are put in place for honor & pride,
for the brave men that refused to hide.
Flags are draped & laid out with care,
for our heroes that have died elsewhere.
These are soldiers, fighting young men,
that loving families will never see again.
You put your lives on the line everyday,
you come home safe but dont get to stay.
Some won't make it back to their home,
may you go to heaven and forever there, roam.
We bow our heads with prayers, and praise,
for these soldiers of the American ways.
They went off to battle in foreign sands,
for war not to come on American lands.
Here's a salute for what you go through,
fighting men of the red, white and blue.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will... My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit... My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will... Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!
I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.
I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.
If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.
When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.
I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

OPSEC or Operational Security
OPSEC & PERSEC
OPSEC, also known as Operational Security, are the principles that we should all abide by when talking about our soldiers. If you’ve been on any military related message board on the internet, you have more than likely seen a warning to be sure to practice OPSEC. This means protecting the information you know about your soldier and his unit.
Generally, it means that you should not give out the following:
- soldier’s exact location overseas
- Any information on troop movements – this includes any movement while they are deployed, in transit to/from theater, etc. Do not ever give dates.
- Any information on weapons systems, how they train or numbers – for this reason, many pictures from overseas can easily violate OPSEC
If a soldier is in a special operations unit, the OPSEC guidelines can be stricter. You may not be able to say he is deployed at all much less where he is.
Always abide by the rules set forth by his unit. Just because it is on the news does not mean that you can talk about the issue. By talking about it, you are only verifying the information.
Never give dates or times for troop movements. This includes R&R dates as well as deployment dates. Planes have been known to be delayed for days or weeks because this information was made public by an excited spouse.
DEPLOYMENT TICKERS
Many wives like to use deployment tickers to count down their soldier’s deployment. Never have a ticker that shows XX days until he returns. If you must have a ticker, then have one with the amount of time he has been gone.
PERSEC
PERSEC is also known as personal security. Like OPSEC, this involves guarding the information that you know. Do not give out your soldier’s name along with rank. Be vague about your personal information on the internet. This is plain common sense in just every day life – regardless of if your husband is in the military.
The old saying loose lips sink ships still holds true today. Keep your soldier, your family and his unit safe by keeping the information you know to yourself. You never know who is lurking and gathering information on message boards, myspace pages and profiles, etc. Better safe than sorry!
Never post
• Military movements (deployment/redeployment dates, dates of field exercises, flight information etc.)… next Tuesday IS a specific date
• Any issues with the unit
• Anything concerning security
• Equipment issues (what, no flak vests?)
• Locations of units (it’s OK to say they’re in Iraq, but not to say that your spouses battalion is at 14th and Ramadan in Kadamiyah)
• Discuss future destinations
• Discuss future operations or missions
• Discuss dates and times of exercises
• Discuss readiness issues or numbers
• Discuss specific training equipment
• Discuss people’s names and billets in conjunction with operations
• Speculate about future operations
• Spread rumors about operations
• Assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on military operations, you, or your family Examples of
Critical Information
• Detailed information about missions of assigned units
• Details concerning locations and times of unit deployments
• Personal transactions that occur in large numbers (pay information, powers of attorney, wills and deployment information)
• References to trend in unit morale
• Personnel problems
• Details concerning security procedures
• An increase in field exercises
• Large troop movements
• Railhead details
• Ceremonies
• Large number of wills and power of attorneys being processed
• Increase in financial activity
• Tightened security
• POV storage lots being set up

Every United States Soldier there ever was and ever will be. When you see them shake their hand and tell them Thank you. They fight for sanity in the chaos and repetition whether it is wartime or peace, their past or their present.
