I'm interested in things which give me hope. For example, did you know that scientists have regrown chopped-off limbs in animals, and made paralyzed animals walk using stem cell therapy? Boy, are we stupid. We're brilliant but we ignore each other. I'm also interested in South Park.
I would really like to meet myself from ten years ago and tell him a couple of goddam things. Actually, I think I'll go do that now.
U2, REM, Robert Johnson, Connells, old Van Halen, Debussy, Train, David Mead, Led Zeppelin, Rocking Horse Winner, Red House Painters, old Indigo Girls, John Williams, that Rohan theme from the Two Towers, ah screw it, have you noticed that most people just make a list? What if I didn't? Instead I shall compose a poem:
Music is the food of love
And I've a taste for sweets
I've played guitars
In reeking bars
Where no one's named the streets
I'd stink of smoke when I'd come home
So I laid down my axe
Instead of singing
Now I'm slinging
Screenplays out in stacks.
While I write, I'll listen in
On Guster, Poe, or Floyd
Or Patty Griffin's
Soulful riffin
Till I get annoyed.
Nick Drake's got my Cure and Tonic,
Till Police arrive;
Then Rickie Lee
Will spring me free
While Joni takes the dive.
Filter shoots me in the face
Till Jonatha spins verse
Now Norah, sing
to ease the Sting
This poem's getting worse!
Lastly, I can't say enough
'Bout Jazz, and so I won't,
I'll simply say
I play it all day
Ah, fuck it, no I don't.
Anything but Michael Bay. I hear this is pretty good: www.whatismoving.com
Television is evil and I'm going to stop watching NOW. And by now I mean, right after the Simpsons.
I grew up on Watership Down and Elfquest. I grew sideways with Robert Asprin. I got deeper with Power of One and Atlas Shrugged and anything about science. I became happy around the time of Conversations with God, although that may just be coincidence, or have something to do with the fact that I actually put the book together on my computer while at college, including the cover design and typesetting. I got me literate with Shakespeare, and grew a spine courtesy of Robert Heinlein. I tasted word syrup in Tar Baby, and got smart at last when I read something called Less Than Words Can Say. Read your own books, you can't have mine. No!
