I like records...which means that moving day is always the worst day of my life...blah blah blah, collecting since I was a kid (the baby pics with records exist somewhere) bought crappy decks in 1995. I ruined my college career and any hope of financial security to become a "musician." Started making mixtapes, spinning on micropower radio (free radio Fresno) and finally hit college radio in 1998 with the Beat Dynasty (big shouts to Mike Powell and DJ Transparent). It was around that time that I hooked up with a local crew called Deep Shag and turntable terror ensued, we cleared the Fresno State ampitheater in less than 5 minutes. While this was going on I started writing and doing what I like to call "stand-up poetry" at local cafe's, there was a group of us that basically mocked the other poets and killed regularly. Later Devoya Mayo and her friend Joy asked the Beat Dynasty to join her Aww Yeah Poetry crew putting music behind poets. Then this dude named Che Guevera popped up in the Deep Shag circle, he had just done a tape single with this dude dj Flipside (the one shouted out in the beginning of Rasco's "The Unassissted") called "Dreams." He changed his name to Octavius and started working with James Kirkman from Deep Shag...later when he wanted to put together a live act he asked me to join, along with dj Astro (later Subtek), Taron Barefield (from the Sleepover Disaster), and a vocalist named Autumn (later in Little Instruments)... we made quite a spectacle in shitty local clubs, then Octavius moved to Hawaii and the band was put on hold. In the meantime I started producing. I dj'ed for the band Gryp (R.I.P. to the great Jason Garcia) and tried to figure out how I was going to be a Fresno musician. Then I got a call from Octavius, he had just moved to S.F. and wanted to make an E.P. to shop to labels, so we recorded "The Electric 3rd Rail" in my run down house in the middle of a Fresno summer in triple digit heat in 48 hour periods between days he had to work in SF. Some guy named Gary Rivera liked it and put it out on Just One Ent. The release received great reviews in the Wire and in Urb magazine and won us fans in Australia and Spain. Gary also ran a spot called Rico's loft, that's where Octavius reformed as a duo and we opened for Sage Francis and Anticon. I moved to the bay area in 2001 to promote Octavius and to save my sanity, started spinning for Just One parties, recorded the Octavius "Modern Chairs" 12inch, my first solo album "Sex, Darwinism and the Jungles of Hades" (which recieved luke-warm reviews in Urb Magazine) and played with Octavius and new recruits Geno Cruz and Nathanial Eras (also later in Little Instruments) in SF, Portland and Seattle... opening for groups like Anti-Pop Consotium and the Fog. I split from Octavius after working on a couple of songs for their Mush label debut "Audio Noir" album (which was nominated for an LA Weekly award and earned the band a spot on Urb magazine's next 100) to do my own thing. I toured Europe with Just One and dj Centipede (Mophono) spinning records for crowds in London, Paris and Barcelona. Since becoming a Bay Area DJ I've shared bills with Fabio & Grooverider, DJ Revolution (from the Wake-Up Show) and countless local heads (the crew: Chan Chan, Swayzee, Vin Sol, Big Ant)... While all of this was happening I met MC Dopestyle at Amoeba records, we started working as a group called The Dead Have Highways and recorded an album that was a bit too heady for most and never finished, however the sessions gave way to our first proper album "Fool's Pool." I also joined Dopestyle 1231 (Dopestyle and Tom C.) as their tour DJ and shared bills with Danger Mouse & Jemini, Mush recording acts Busdriver, Radioinactive and Thavius Beck, Boots from the Coup, Motion Man, Kutmasta Kurt & Kool Keith. Currently I play in the band Black Fiction (featuring members of Ray's Vast Basement, Feller Quentin, Hattatak, Straggler, White Pee... everyone is a workaholic). We've played with Dengue Fever, The Sensations, Oranger, The Fiery Furnaces, Barbarasteele (R.I.P. to the man Mike Geto), Kelly Stoltz, The Sermon, Why?, Akron Family, Antelope, T.I.T.S., Citay, The Dry Spells, Pillows, Tussle, Lemonade...which led us to win SF Weekly's best indy band of 2006 award. On the horizon are numerous new solo projects, a new collaboration with avant piano badass Armen Nalbandian called *RE-Group* and random collaborations with Los Angeles beatsmith / sound collage madman Nocturnal Ron. I've also been fortunate enough to play in the improv band White Pee.
If you're into memory loss and potential liver injury I also hold 2 DJ residencies in San Francisco: Sip Bar (with the best staff in the whole city, 787 Broadway @ Powell) and Beauty Bar (Sucker Free Sunday with my boo Rebecca Watkins and Krang...formerely Marco Vega, 19th & Mission, what happens there, stays there).
Someday someone may connect the dots...
