Everything is all I want to know.

About Me

Curious, mindful and striving to become awake, my life is a constant pursuit of knowledge and serenity. That doesn't mean I don't have fun - I just find it in different, mostly nondestructive ways. I am a person of strong (often liberal) opinions and possessed of a really big mouth with which to share them. A raging chocoholic with well-defined tastes, I will be happy to inform you why Godiva is terrible and Hershey's and Nestle's aren't worth your time or anyone else's. Although I can pretty much count the number of friends I have on my hands, I love them very much (even the ones I haven't talked to in a while). If you have the time, I will tell you why gays must pursue marriage equality as opposed to civil unions, why Buddy Holly needs your help and why cats are supreme beings in little fur coats. My Interests

Rock and roll, chocolate, cats, reading, walking, San Francisco, New York City, Hello Kitty, skulls, art, Asian studies (specifically Japanese studies), figuring out the role of God in the world, developing new talents, participating in discovery and acts of creation, learning, bathing, witnessing miracles and/or history.

I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet a beautiful Siberian Forest Cat, about a year old, black, blue, red, mackerel, chocolate, tabby, tawny or brindle coat, who likes to cuddle, snort catnip and chase flies. All genders may apply. I never declaw.

But if you mean humans... living humans, presumably... Hmm... famous, too, I'll bet... Sophia Loren, Jim Carrey (who's looking particularly attractive of late; long haired guys over 40 rock), JK Rowling, Leonard Cohen, John Cleese (or any Python, actually), David Byrne, Mark Morford, Gary US Bonds, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Waits, Barry Gibb, Kinky Friedman, and you.

Music:

Warren Zevon is the finest songwriter of the last forty years. I also like David Byrne, Paul Simon, Kevin Quain, Kate Bush, Tom Waits, John Lennon, Queen, Joni Mitchell, The Zombies, any and all oldies, much classic rock that isn't overplayed on mainstream radio and Serge Gainsbourg (sui generis, that guy). I also have an unfortunate soft spot for bad 70's AOR, and I happen to own every Bee Gees album ever recorded except a few collections and Life in a Tin Can.

Movies:

I don't go very often. And I haven't seen a whole lot of them. Still, anything Hitchcock, Monty Python or Miyazaki will be excellent, and I love good comedies. Last really good movies watched: Yellow Submarine, Notorious, Woman in the Dunes, North by Northwest.

Television:

They've removed the rabbit ears on those things, haven't they? How am I supposed to recognize them now?

Books:

All of them? Specifically, the Harry Potter series, Chuang-Tzu (by Chuang-Tzu; poor you if you've never read it), The Book of Tea (Okakura Kakuzo; currently rereading), The Importance of Understanding (Lin Yutang), The Woman Warrior (Maxine Hong Kingston), Eugene Onegin (Aleksandr Pushkin), but for the most part, I'll read anything. Current favorite authors: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jonathan Carroll.
Current Reading: Christopher Moore, A Dirty Job; Goerge Feifer, Breaking Open Japan; Mort Rosenthal, Chocolate: The Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light

Heroes:

My dad - I'm going to spend my entire life trying to live up to his example.

Going to Hell? So am I.

Dear faithful readers of The Blog of KT Lowe: I regret to inform you that I'm going to hell.  The proselytizers on campus said so, and they must have something there.  Anyone who spouts...

More Rock Hall oversights.

In response to my previous blog regarding this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, I was called upon to review the Rock Hall's list of those worthy enough to get in. I should remind you of t...

Rock Hall nominees and punditry

It's the yearly disappointment: Warren Zevon is, once again, not a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  After suffering for another year, I examine the other nominees, and there's the usu...

Something that passes for a song, I think...

After not writing anything original in about five months, I wrote two songs in 48 hours.  I have always had periodic blocks of time where I wrote nothing at all (not to be confused with writer's ...

What’s in a name?

Pure. That's what most sources say my first name means. Pure what? Pure in body? Thought? Discretion? The name has connotations I'm not particularly fond of, particularly regarding race and virg...

A walk in the cemetery

In keeping with the impending season and my own generally macabre tastes, I have discovered I have taking a liking to walking in the cemetery.  Ann Arbor supposedly has three prominent cemeteries...

How to Be a Snob, KT-Style

(or, The Chocolate Sutra of Superfluous Snobbery)Thus have I heard.  There have been, on this very blog, accusations of my complete and total snobbery.  Obviously, if one of my devoted subsc...
