Back from Africa with stories to tell!

About Me

---I'm still planning to put some tracks up, when I get a minute and when I can figure out how, so hang in there!----Sundar is an internationally recognized saxophonist/flutist and singer with experience in a dizzying range of musical styles, from classical to pop, reggae to jazz and world music and hip hop. He's centered his focus lately on music in the jazz, world and alternative realms. Sundar has had extensive experience as a bandleader, plying his trade in clubs and concert halls throughout the USA, Canada, Africa, Europe and Asia. Currently, he leads two groups: "Sundar’s Induswest Project", and the "Sundar Viswanathan Quartet", and co-leads "The Avataar Collective" and the "Braid/Viswanathan Duo" with Juno winning pianist David Braid. Music has been a ticket around the world for Sundar. He recently performed several successful concerts in South Africa (with return invitations!) and on an extended tour of Europe. On a five-city tour of Japan in 2004, in clubs like Tokyo's 'Shinjuku Pit Inn', 'Flat Home' in Kyoto and "Satin Doll' in Nishinomia, Sundar was featured as a leader with exceptional Japanese musicians. Recently he performed in Toronto with renowned hip hop artist GURU, along with SuperProducer SOLAR and DJ DOOWOP. Other performances that proved rewarding included those at New York’s ‘Dizzy’s Club’, ‘Alice Tully Hall’ at Lincoln Center, ‘The Blue Note’ and ‘Birdland’; the ‘Montreal Bistro’, ‘Living Arts Center’ and ‘Rex Hotel’ in Toronto, two IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators’) conferences, and the famous ‘Wally’s’ and ‘Willow Jazz Club’ in Boston. As a sideman and/or leader he has had the fortune to perform or record with artists that include the Charles Tolliver Big Band, Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Werner, Marcus Belgrave, Al Martino, Muhal Richard Abrams, Donald Byrd, Tasa, Bobby Vinton, John Hicks, Billy Hart, Jim McNeely, Charo, Terry Clarke, Joe Lovano, Anita O’Day, Dave Douglas, Jack Jones, John Abercrombie and Hugh Fraser. With the band "Sundar’s Induswest Project", Sundar is in the process of releasing an album of original music inspired by South Asian music and Jazz. "Hope and Infinity" features heavy-hitters from the Canadian scene, including Kevin Turcotte, Kelly Jefferson, David Braid, Andrew Downing and Anthony Michelli. “Hope and Infinity” showcases all-original material by the alto/soprano saxophonist and includes as guest artist guitarist Rez Abbasi from New York City. This summer Sundar will be co-Directing a jazz septet "the Jazz Camerata" under the auspices of the "Youth Orchestra of the Americas", and organization based in Washington D.C. and Venezuela, on a 5 week tour of Belgium, France, England and Italy.
