"It was simply the best hip-hop dance competition ever!" These were the words that define the 2007 World Hip Hop Championship organized and produced by Hip Hop International in Los Angeles, July 25-29.

The competition included crews who traveled from Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, Russia, UK, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, Germany, Argentina, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, Philippines, Japan, Colombia, Mexico and the USA. This year's events were the largest to date with upwards of 1500 dancers. The scene was incredible and the dancing was crazy.

In the Junior Division (12 and under) the judges were awed and the audience overwhelmed by the artistry and talent displayed by the kids who year after year continue to push the bar higher and higher. The routines were a showcase of all that exemplifies hip-hop dance. There were 17 crews that competed for the gold. The 7 to 12 year olds impressed the judges and delighted the audience with their talent and artistry. The gold medal went to Canada's Freshh (not a mistake, it's written with two "H's" ... probaly to enhance the feeling of freshness and joy we all had watching them dance!). Japan got the silver with the crew Next Jr. and the bronze with Tom Boy who brought an interesting experiment of mixing hip hop dance and traditional martial arts attire ... not very street style, but do we really know if the Japanese kids don't dress like that in the street?

The Varsity Division saw a complete change between the semifinals and the finals. In the semis, USA"s Flipside were first, followed by Japan's Kana Boon! and New Zealand's Fearless. Canadian crews The Unit and Irratik were 4th and 5th. The 9th place Spanish crew Supernenas made it into the finals in their first time participating. In the finals where the crews perform in reverse order of their placement Canada's Irratik went on stage and danced close to perfection. In the audience the feeling and comments were ... "It's too bad they are only 5th, they deserve more". The The Unit came on stage, and agian ... they should earn position in the top three, but the rankings usually doesn't change a lot ... Then the top three performed, and ... wow ... what a competition. The final scores were announced: third place ... Fearless from New Zealand! So much deserved, Second place ... Boom! The first shock: Irratik! The judges really watched and noticed the difference! And World Champion ... Boom again! The Unit! The Canadian spectators went crazy ... the judges chose the crews who danced from their souls on stage. It was a huge moment.

In the Adult Division 38 amazing crews were entered - The highest-level hip-hop competition ever seen. The semifinals were so challenging, it was almost impossible to forsee who was going to advance - the level so high and everybody was really bringing it. But only 12 Crews made it to the finals: Break Da Beat (Italy), Breaking Point Dance Company (USA), Raw (Canada), Dziah (New Zealand), Rewind (Australia), Physical Funk (Germany), Philippino Allstars (the defending World Champions from Philippines), Eclectik (Trinidad & Tobago), and Kaba Modern (USA). The Finals were an amazing show, and many times the audience jumped out of their chairs to show love and appreciation for the dancers. And not just for the dancers of the given country, but for EVERY crew. In the final round the results again proved different from the semis. Italy rose from 12th to 9th place, Breaking Point Dance Company (USA) came up from 11th to 6th. Two Crews made the audience crazy: New Zealand's Triple 8 Funk, with an impressive krumping session in their routine, and Canada's Unified Chaos, whose little chunk of Vogueing was breathtaking. These two crews finished 5th and 4th. Once again, the judges cleared their minds of the previous night's ranking, and judged from scratch. At the end of the evening the bronze was awarded to the defending champions from Philippines, the Philippino Allstars - another crew favorite of the audience. Silver went to the USA's Kaba Modern - probaly the most talented dancers to ever grace the stage of the World Championship. And Gold ... Gold went to Trinidad & Tobago's amazingly creative Eclectik after 4 years of silver and bronze medals! Their performances are always special and this time they were finally rewarded with the gold.

There were many exciting additions and special events at this year's championship that started with the appearance of Randy Jackson (American Idol Judge) who Hip Hop Internationl was honored to have as the medal presenter to all winners. Randy also announced the upcoming MTV dance competition series he is coproducing with Hip Hop International founders Howard and Karen Schwartz. The "Father of Hip Hop", DJ Kool Herc was on board to accept the 2007 Living Legend of Hip Hop Award. Poppin' Pete and Don "Campbellock" Campbell showcaed with the winners of Hip Hop International's first World Lockin' and Poppin' Battles. Bboy crew Killa4nia beat out Mexico's Rhythm Invade for the 2007 World Bboy Battle title and the $3,000 cash prize.

Hip Hop International was pleased to again welcome back Pepsi and Paul Mitchell Hair Care Products as sponsors for the 2007 championship events.

Special thanks to Head Judge Natasha Jean Bart and Judiciary Director Ian Levia for a job well done.
