Federation for Kentucky Equality, Inc. and Kentucky Equality Coalition, Inc. ("Kentucky Equality Federation") share a mission to achieve equality and fairness for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Kentuckians:Kentucky Equality is Kentucky's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Kentucky Equality leads efforts for LGBT civil rights at the state level through an array of strategies including sponsoring legislation and leading efforts to ensure their passage, lobbying legislators and other government officials, building coalitions, and empowering other organizations and individuals to engage in the political process. The Kentucky Equality Coalition informs gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) people and the public at large about issues impacting the LGBT community and our allies, trains them to respond and work proactively for LGBT equality, and connects communities working for justice and civil rights for all.Kentucky Equality Coalition projects focus on organizing community forums and legislative briefings, educating voters, creating and distributing educational materials and mobilizing activists.Kentucky Equality Federation is the proud winner of the 2007 Social Justice Award. We sincerely thank everyone who voted for us!"Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group." ~ Coretta Scott King (widow of Widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.)Get this widget!OFFICIAL ARTWORK:Increase awareness! I'd like to meet:

Citizens in the Bluegrass Region of the commonwealth who will stand and be heard! There is nothing within the sovereign borders of this commonwealth that validates, protects or encourages our existence. We need people who are not afraid to stand alone; sometimes a single voice is louder than an entire band. Citizens who will fight for what is fair, just, and uniform for all; people who will defend the spirit, of the Constitution of Kentucky."If you do not raise your hand in protest, then you are part of the problem."PLATFORM ISSUES: If you have an issue you would like the Federation to consider adding to our yearly platforms, first post the issue in our group and see what other people think about it!

GROUPS TO JOIN: We have compiled a list of groups related to Kentucky or LGBT issues: Commonwealth of Kentucky (political group attached to this profile) Gay Kentucky GLBT Christians United Nations
FOR THE RECORD:02/22/2007: Hundreds stormed the commonwealth's Capitol on February 22, 2007 to support domestic-partner benefits for heterosexual and homosexual couples. (more)02/01/2007: Kentucky Equality Federation pledges to triple funding and support to Gay-Straight Alliances in Kentucky educational facilities. ( more )12/22/2006: Anti-gay Christians miss message. ( more )10/25/2006: Representative Fischer's (R) statement upsets gays; Kentucky Equality Federation lashes out. ( more )09/22/2006: Northern Kentucky University ("NKU") caves to pressure from the Kentucky Equality Federation regarding a hate crime/act of intolerance involving a gay student. ( more )09/05/2006: Kentucky Equality Federation expands community services to include reporting hate crimes, discrimination, and school bullying; Federation now acts as a buffer between the victim and local officials, ensuring immediate action is taken to correct the situation. You can now complete a report online and submit it to Kentucky Equality Federation. We will do everything possible and necessary to protect your privacy, and we will ensure your constitutional freedoms, rights, and liberties are protected. ( more )08/22/2006: Kentucky Equality Federation demands (and receives) an immediate apology and investigation from Steak n' Shake after the Manager on Duty at a location in Louisville, KY asks the "fags" to leave. ( more )07/21/2006: Boone County High School in Northern Kentucky ended months of stonewalling and avoided a federal lawsuit by finally approving the formation of its first Gay-Straight Alliance. After working with the school for months, Kentucky Equality Federation notified the Board of Education of its intention to sue to school Board if it failed to approve the club immediately. ( more )05/06/2006: Kentucky Equality Federation makes headlines across the commonwealth as its members assemble near the Governor's Mansion to protest funding to the University of the Cumberlands and other policies of the Fletcher Administration during the Governor's Annual Derby Breakfast Celebration. ( more )04/11/2006: Republican Governor Fletcher declared yesterday "Diversity Day," then cut from the government's employment policy a provision that explicitly protected gay workers from being discriminated against. ( more )04/05/2006: The University of the Cumberlands expels a student for revealing that he is gay on myspace.com. The university is a religious school, part of the Southern Baptist Convention (the worst church for homosexual repression). Because the student was kicked out mid-semester, he received a failing grade. ( more )03/18/2006: Though a similar bill was introduced and killed in the House, this time the Senate introduces a bill to remove protection provided by the cities of Covington, Lexington, and Louisville against discrimination based on sexual orientation. This bill was also seeking to limit the authority of Kentuckys Judicial Branch. This legislation was killed in the Senate thanks to Senate Democrats, and a lot of activism. ( more )03/16/2006: Gay Parenting (Northern Kentucky Post)01/05/2006: Representatives Joseph M. Fischer (Campbell County), and Stan Lee (Fayette County) introduce legislation to the House of Representatives to remove protection provided by the cities of Covington, Lexington, and Louisville against discrimination based on sexual orientation. The legislation is killed in the House thanks to a lot of activism. ( more )12/11/2005: Members of Kentucky Equality Federation thank Wells Fargo Bank, and Ford Motor Co. for not caving to pressure from anti-gay groups for their gay-friendly policies.
SUICIDE PREVENTION: Homosexuality is not unique in its status as an issue some people use to justify their hatred and/or repression of others. Some of the people who treat LGBT the worst are their friends, family, and churches upon learning of their sexuality. This double jeopardy situation leads many LGBT people to the brink of despair (and often beyond the brink, to suicide). The Trevor Helpline is the only national toll-free 24-hour, 365 day-a-year confidential suicide hotline for homosexuals or those questioning their sexuality.SUICIDAL WARNING SIGNS HOW TO HELP A SUICIDAL PERSONIf you or someone you care about is showing suicidal signs, call a trained counselor at The Trevor Helpline (866) 4U-TREVOR.
