Hollywood ca. 90028submergedart gallery Obituary jun 1, 2000-july 19th 2007Proprietor Salomon Anaya challenged the Hollywood norm by establishing a public art space submergedart gallery in the heart of Hollywood. Amidst the rush of traffic, nightclubs and bars, a seed of culture bloomed on the corner of Cahuenga and Selma. Seven years ago Salomon recognized potential in the neglected remains of a building littered with needles and trash. The building was transformed and dedicated into an artspace whose mission was to expand people’s definition of what art was. Submergedart offered an alternative to the typical Hollywood club scene . Surrounded by fast food, parties and parking lots the gallery was a cultural anomaly. Despite the challenge this presented there was always a positive reaction from anyone who entered the gallery. And you never knew who was going to enter. From hipsters to homeless, sightseeing tourists to revolutionaries and whoever came in between, all were welcome. This inclusive energy extended past its visitors and into the art and events showcased in the gallery. Submergedart represented diversity with shows whose subjects ranged from photography, paintings, sculptures, live performance, graffiti art and murals. The space was also home to fundraisers for non-profit organizations and political groups, as well as cultural gatherings for all communities. Through out its life Submergedart Gallery has had many incarnations. As a vintage clothing store "Trapo vintage boutique" it was wallpapered with scraps of fabric, and housed hand selected one of a kind garments and an upright piano. During this time it became a gathering place for artists, designers and musicians to create. On certain Sundays the parking lot was transformed into a marketplace extension of the Hollywood farmer’s market, Friday’s were often screening nights for independent and foreign films. The gallery even created an even that was a 24 hour non-stop community art gathering, which included live art, musical performance, dj’s and dancing. There were no limits imposed on what was possible at Sumbergedart Gallery. When the big green doors were open you never knew what o expect, but there was always something going on.The answer “no. you cannot” was never uttered. You have the space now see what you can create.“ - salomon anaya"sad but true Nike killed the art" beware of the corporate giant give them an inch and they will take a foot
