WYTCHCRAFT were founded in February 1999 by Patrice Kestner and Daniel Westheide who, for a lack of musicians to complete the line-up, recorded the first demo-CD-R (released in September 1999) as a two piece. Reactions in the doom scene were positive and following the release there were several sampler appearances, for example on the Into The Dark Season sampler released with the German Twilight Magazine. Moreover, after the release, Kai Tubbesing of DEAD SVAN DARK and OPION (vocals) and Eric Asmussen (TWILIGHT PICTURES, bass) joined the band.
In January 2002 Patrice Kestner left the band due to lack of time, but at the same time the band finally found a drummer, Fabian Regmann. Besides, in the beginning of 2002, Markus Kratz, who had already played with Eric Asmussen in TWILIGHT PICTURES, joined WYTCHCRAFT as a second guitarist.
In June 2002 the new promo CD-R "To Die In The Arms Of Winter" was released. Apart from two songs still recorded with Patrice Kestner on guitar, as a bonus it contains three live songs recorded in Dortmund on 04-20-2002.
After the release of the mini CD "Grenzgnger", the first proper studio recording of the band, in February 2003, WYTCHCRAFT were able to establish their name in the doom scene and got the chance to play among others at the first DOOM SHALL RISE festival, with ORODRUIN, PENANCE, OFFICIUM TRISTE as well as their first foreign gig in Gent/Belgium with MIRROR OF DECEPTION and RISING DUST, hailing from France.
In April 2005 the band's first full-length recording was released, the album with the title "I Taste Your Fucking Tears Of Sorrow". As on "Grenzgnger", the five musicians did not allow the label doom metal to set any limitations concerning their sound. Although the core of their music is clearly doom and the slightly medieval touch in some of their melodies is still apparent, it shows manifold influences from viking metal, traditional heavy metal and even some progressive elements, and vocalist Kai makes use of his death metal vocals more than ever before in the band's history, giving the album a shift into a somewhat more aggressive direction.
