About Me

no wave. no step. i am true of heart! no bullshit! social. e-socialable. honest. laid back. vegan. (sub/counter) cultured. articulate. caring. calm. well traveled. positive. liberal/radical. giving. realistic. helpful. creative. punk. sweet. critical. informed. anti-authority. kind of busy. i am a dual citizen (US and Ireland). i collect many things. i am comfortable in both urban and rural environments. no suburbs!i have alot of jobs and i'm always interested in more!i try to keep a pleasant demeanor at all times.i like to have quality conversations with quality people. i like to surround myself with lots of friends, potential friends, like minded strangers and anyone willing to engage in interesting or constructive dialogue.i hate backstabbing friends, i don't forgive people, especially friends who screw me over - i hold vicious grudges. i don't like racism, homophobia or sexism. i dislike images you can buy, egoism, shallowness, carelessness, wastefulness, suburban sprawl, conservative mind sets and greed.i am explicitly unfashionable. sorry.and inwardly particular. and at a loss for further explanation.i edited my profile MYSELF.

My Interests

music (playing and listening), djing, college radio, wxjm, wrsu, wprb, wrlc, politics, social justice, veganism, travel, reading, culture, art, film, language, communication, altruism, science. I like meeting people, people watching, talking to people and being a person. i also like things, stuff, tools, weighty personal possessions to help slow me down even more such as records, books, movies, musical instruments, electronics, etc. i like my cell phone and my lap top because they help me be in touch with friends. i also like house plants, fruit, ceiling fans, gardens, games, critique, animals, beautiful scenery, headbands, soft sheets, tea, ireland, collages, wit, rhyme, writing, sound collage, national parks, local power, spicy food, snow, clouds, museums, revolution (social, political and artistic), spring, canasta, lifting weights, petting cats, riding bikes, walking in the woods, autumn, protests, cabins, not really dancing unless i'm very drunk, large bodies of water, board games, nice kitchens, boycotts, vegan potlucks, outdoor parties, npr, appropriate lighting, destroying things, sitting on green grass, music festivals, really cool girls. small towns and big cities. mountains and oceans. i used to set up shows for wxjm but i don't do that for now, but it doesn't hurt to ask. i took photography and film classes but i'm without a manual camera or means to devolop at the moment, not sure if i even remember. food - the smell of food, the taste of food, the way food looks. restaurants. cooking.places i like: south brunswick, princeton, new brunswick, brooklyn, harrisonburg, asheville, montreal, berlin, tokyo, prague, france, ireland.Things i want to get into but probably need help with: writing (film, record, show, travel) revues. film (acting, camera work, directing, writing), computers in general, making video art, extreme sports. PLEASE HELP!

I'd like to meet:

people who don't interupt when i'm obviously in the middle of a conversation.i like friendly people who are also interesting, compassionate, engaged, artistic, radiant, natural, energetic, appreciative, magnetic, warm, active, cultured, self-made people. people to take me on hikes, road trips, to good shows, performances, galleries and museums, people who show me their favorite places, let me try their favorite foods, play me their favorite records & movies and lend me their favorite books. i like straight-edge kids, not straight-edge kids, adventurers, vagabonds, railriders, activists, motivational friends, well adjusted companions, workout partners, cellmates.oh yeah and..."girls with records" (not police records, i'm talking vinyl - but i guess police records are ok too - fuck the pigs). I'd like to meet radical, smooth, positive, mature, aggressive girls. mod girls that don't suck, smart techno girls, techno girls who wear big pants, techno girls who do not wear big pants! djs, dancers, artists, musicians, anarchists and punks. where are the liberated vegan girls with exquisite style, taste and charm!?I'm not interested in: fashionistas, lame sassy myspacers, creeps, people who lie to me, cheaters, shallow, inconsiderate, self-centered people, people who can't hold their drink, overly sketchy people. No more glittery comments, tricked out myspace layouts, bad attitudes, egos.i am not trying to use myspace to learn about new bands. i never listen to bands on here. I'm open to talking about music, but not really as a pretext. i love to discuss books, travel and armchair sociology.i've never really met anyone on the internet (though i'm not opposed to it). please do not add me as a friend if we've never met or at least introduced ourselves over the interweb. please write a personal message if you want to get in touch. i'm nice.i'd like to meet people with similiar interests in charlottesville, staunton and other nearby cities; the walls are closing in on little old harrisonburg and i'm feeling a bit too old for this college town. (please get me out of here!)also, probably alot of the people i'd like to meet don't use myspace. so this seems pointless.

Music:

i dj idm, down tempo, and various other types of glitchy electronica on wxjm in harrisonburg, va on tuesday nights from midnight till two AM - you can listen online @ http://134.126.61.119:8002/ (OFF FOR THE SUMMER/WINTER BREAK). On the radio in the past i've djed hardcore, screamo, post punk, post hardcore, indie rock, noise and jazz since 1996.I Dj a watered down version of that at parties when i drag my turntables out. limited to what i have on vinyl, what weirdness my friends can tolerate and how many times i can stand being told to play something more dancey before i say fuckit and just play something more dancey. i've been known to resort to 80's rock and 90's hip hop, etc in those situations. if anyone wants me to play what i think is good or appropriate, ask.i like instrumental rock, minimal techno, idm, sound collages, soundclash, digital hardcore, breakcore, math rock/post hardcore, noise/jazz, some indie pop, some old pop punk, modern composers, some old hardcore (95 not 88), lefty hip hop, 90's hip hop, various traditional and modern jazz, select reggae (too much mention of jah annoys me though), oldtime country and bluegrass, dub, delta blues, some post punk, good fast grindy metal!such as: aphex twin, tortoise, sonic youth, bjork, don caballero, fugazi, radiohead, alec empire, christoph de babalon, pole, oval, squarepusher, u-ziq, plaid, autechre, boards of canada, bonobo, fourtet, prefuse 73, seam, blonde redhead, trans am, a minor forest, hoover, mogwai, maximillian colby, sleepy time trio, dj shadow, antibalas afrobeat orchestra, old U2, old REM, the cure, the smiths, cat power, the van pelt (and other chris leo projects), shellac, velvet underground (especially with nico), rachel's, steve reich, philip glass, john cage, terry riley, stereolab, broadcast, portishead, at the gates, darkest hour, morser, slayer, old metalica, lifetime, frail, wu tang, dead prez, gang starr/dj premier, friends bands: ultra dolphins, risk relay, engine down, snack truck and many many more...some labels i like: ghostly, warp, rephlex, kranky, schematic, aesthetics, touch and go, hefty, mutek, minus, dischord, troubleman, temporary residence, matador, quarterstick, dragcity, thrill jockey, lovitt, etc.festivals and conferences: fuse-in/movement in detroit (demf), mutek festival in montreal, cmj, more than music (does that still happen?), macrock (here in lovely harrisonburg - macrock.org), rainbow gathering, n.c.o.r (national conference on organized resistance, shentai, i'd like to go to burning man but i've never been.my favorite music is punk music.all that being said i've been feeling kind of stagnant about music lately, i listen to lots of news radio instead.

Movies:

I house manage and project at a movie theater that runs an ongoing independant and foreign film series. courtsquaretheater.com has the films i'm showing. you can add the 'court square theater' myspace for bulletins with our schedule (the website is more up-to-date). unfortunately i don't do programming at the theater.recently saw (this is impossible to keep up with): marie antoinette, super bad, fur, transformers, knocked up, la vie en rose, waitress, lives of others, snakes on a plane, russian ark, sicko, the wind that shakes the barley, casino royale, chumscrubber, U.S. vs. Jon Lennon, Quinceanera, Jonny Was, Wassup Rockers, Thumbsucker, lonesome jim, word play, mongolian ping pong, On a clear day, go for zucker, downtown 81, tsotsi, constant gardener, life aquatic, thx1138, fire walk with me (for the 5th time), mystic maseur, Lucia Lucia, baran (iranian), city of god, together (chinese), the player, logans run.also i like i heart huckabees, brief history of time, true romance, hurly burly, slam, ronin, best in show, following, wavelength, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, monty python movies, 8 1/2. david lynch, harry smith, maya deren, bunuel, most terry gilliam, most godard and truffaut. i often prefer documentaries. i took a bunch of film classes (...as a visual art, as a narrative art and experimental).i mostly like dramas, art films, future dystopia movies, coming of age tales, documentaries about interesting things, political thrillers and the occasional romantic comedy or action movie. why do foreign films almost always seem better?i don't like most really fast cut, mtv generation movies that are filmed like a sit-com. i hate bad dialogue!i have a decently sized movie library. if you borrowed one of my movies and didnt give it back, give it back. now. then you can borrow another.find me on netflix if u want to see movies on my queue or read reviews i've written. i've rated about 500 movies with their simplified 5 star system. my email address is [email protected]

Television:

i don't like television too much. tasteful documentaries, local access, nature shows, exotic travel shows, occassional sports with friends. i don't even get reception or pay for cable so this is a strictly out of the house occasion.TV that i really hate - most sit-coms & corny soap operas, nickelodian, full house, saved by the bell, shallow reality shows.TV that was ok - twin peaks, kids in the hall, wondershowzen, old saturday night live, quantum leap, chapelle show, simpsons, star trek(the next generation), dukes of hazard, the marvel cartoon with iceman, spiderman and firestar, some pbs, my so called life, some x-files, curb your enthusiasm, robot chicken, southpark, democracy now, occasional music documentaries. HD planet earth!watching commercial tv and actual commercials helps me keep up with marketing strategies but it sure is degrading.

Books:

i'm on goodreads.com now so look me up if you use it.currently reading (this is rarely up to date and accurate) "An Empire Wilderness" - Robert Kaplan, "MVP" James Boice, "God Is Not Great" - Hitchens, "New Brunswick New Jersey Goodbye" - Ronen Kaufman, (re)reading: "The Revolution of Everyday Life" - Vaneigem.read recently: "Troubled Sleep" - Sartre, "After Dachau" - Daniel Quinn, "Immortality" - Milan Kundera, "The God Delusion" - Richard Dawkins, "57 Octaves" - Chris Leo, "Living My Life Volume 2" - Emma Goldman, "Letter to a Christian Nation" - Sam Harris, "Watership Down" -Richard Adams, "Absurdistan" by Gary Shteyngart, "Jailbird" -Vonnegut, "New Comer's Guide to the Afterlife","Providence", "Story of B", "Ishmael", "My Ishmael" -Daniel Quinn "The Book of Laugher and Forgetting" (Milan Kundera), "Stranger in a Strange Land" (Robert Heinlein), "Slowness" (Kundera), "Ham on Rye" (Bukowski), "Dude Where's My Country" (Michael Moore), "The Secret Agent" (Joseph Conrad), "Slaughter House Five" (Vonnegut), "God of Small Things" (Arundhati Roy), "You Shall Know Our Velocity", "Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius" (both by Dave Eggars), "The Crying of Lot 49" (Thomas Pynchon), "The Ends of the Earth" (Robert Kaplan), "Charlie Wilson's War" (George Crile), - oh and some geography and modern middle east text books and a photography guide. "White Pigeons" (Chris Leo), "The Sun Also Rises" (Hemmingway), "Animal Farm" (Orwell - which i never read in jr. high for some reason!).some of my classic favorites are farenheit 451, siddhartha, unbearable lightness of being. As a kid i liked C.S. Lewis (until i found out he had a christian agenda), beverly cleary, mary stewart, etc. i still like young, simple stuff like sedaris, quinn, edgars, vonnegut, etc. also political/philosophical subjects: camus, sartre, chomsky, various AK press titles.magazines - next american city, wire, punk planet, adbusters, harpers, etc.MAPS! travel guides! Newspapers! I used to read marvel comics and i am often nostaligic for them.i've always wanted to be in a book club. anyone?

Heroes:

Cool little kids! Some adults like - Amy Goodman, Noam Chomsky, Emma Goldman, Ralph Nader, Richard Dawkins, the animal liberation front, the earth liberation front, Doctors without Borders. Those in Mexico, Palestine, Ireland and around the world struggling for self rule. Media activists, the new athiests, social justice activits, lawyers fighting for social justice, civil rights and immigration reform, Scientists and researchers that provide alternatives to animal testing, scientists and researchers searching for important things rather than profitable discoveries, small business people with a positive mission, those who make community ...Although having heroes seems weird and unrealistic.I revile preachers, racists, homophobes, evangelists, the bush administration, minutemen, missionaries, rightwing politicians and pundits, companies who abuse/use animals, fur for fashion, destroyers of the environment, big pharmaceuticals, big tobacco, big weapons manufacturers, etc...and tacit supporters suck too.
