About Me

The Bitter End (N.Y.C) December 26, 2007The Bitter End, New York's fabled nightclub, could not have been prepared for the Tour De Force of Ms Kim Kalest's new band KIMISTRY. While many hard core crooners and jazz performers are content to chase the ghosts of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Holiday, Ms Kalesti's new group owes little to old tradition. She presented a program of all original songs, in which her talents as an improvisational singer were showcased. Many of us have been wondering what will the next new thing be in music. Ms.Kalesti and KIMISTRY may well be part of the answer. The songs also broke with the traditional song forms and were characterized by Ms Kalesti's free improvised melismas grounded on driving ostinatos from her band members. This was a courageous effort by Ms Kalesti and certainly, in this reviewers opinion, deserves to be heard, and will surely be emulated by musicians world-wide who are searching for new ways to express freedom in their voices and on their instruments.Kimistry
