I am here for Friends

About Me

I'm privileged to have a daughter who encouraged and enabled my having a presence here. She is one of three wonderful (grown) children -- each unique and special and a genuine source of joy to me. I find myself in a small community here on Whidbey Island working in a local retail branch of a national bank after chasing my financial services career around the US for 30 years, taking my morning walks along Holmes Harbor and finding pleasure in simpler things while exploring my passion for art, music and life in all its manifestations. And what talented, interesting friends I'm discovering here! My "blog" contains some "poetic" observations from milestone moments in the journey. I appreciate your taking a moment out to stop by and hopefully, say hello!

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Some of the fabulous, creative musicians who amaze and delight with their ability to continuously innovate via lyrics and melodies that are fresh and evocative...performers with substance and conviction...artists who both reveal more about who we are and who forge new horizons with their singular expressions, authors who transport and tranform us through their tales and/or insights...and new talent is emerging all around us! Television
I seldom watch the tube anymore (and have no access!). Guilty pleasures once included JAG, Joan of Arcadia, NCIS, Numbers, & Once and Again. And from TV Land days: The Wonder Years, Eight Is Enough, every episode of M*A*S*H (okay, Love, American Style and Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In...!)

Heroes
Hmmm...outside of JC and the apostles, it's difficult to come up with a definitive list. Since there are truly incredible people all around us, each person I meet is fascinating and uniquely gifted, with much to offer if there is opportunity for an exchange. My friend, Colonel John Forquer USMC is certainly high on the list of people I know whom I respect and admire.

Favorite Quotes:
Life is not a rehearsal.
Life is what happens when you're making other plans.
Blessed are the flexible, they shall not be broken.
Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
It's easier to believe the bad stuff.
The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears.
The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
I slept and dreamt that life was Joy.
I woke and saw that life was Duty.
I acted, and behold, Duty was Joy.
The highest proof of virtue is to possess boundless power without abusing it.
We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.
A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.
Truth is everything, I countered. Virtue is everything. Appearances are falling leaves, blowing in the wind, here for a moment, & gone forever. Truth & Character are what remain.
I have studied many times
The marble which was chiseled for me—
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its
disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one’s life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire—
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.
