Mïke Rotavèle Rebel Without Applause

If you see California, say hello...

About Me

Yes, I'm 34, so what? I still get carded and I still get into new music, books, movies and all things pop culture. And I remain young at heart!
So far, following four trips, Paris, France is my favorite city, followed by Montréal, Canada -- too many trips to count -- and Glendale, California, which most people consider part of Los Angeles.
I lived in Glendale from March of 2003 to March of 2006 when health problems finally necessitated moving back to Massachusetts. I had surgery to repair two inguinal hernias that June, but other problems persist. (Oh well, Boston is wicked cool, too.)
A former part-time entertainment journalist, I've been published in a few magazines, such as Lollipop, Oui and the late LiveWire. In addition to doing features, I wrote a column called Import Zone for Lollipop and a column called Movies, Media & Mayhem for LiveWire and Oui.
In the mid to late 90s, I published a rock zine called Ant, The Only Cool Magazine That Bites, and my childhood heroes lined up to chat with me. Bruce Dickinson, Geezer Butler, Sebastian Bach, Scott Ian, Taime Downe, Chip Z'Nuff, Dee Snider, Jeff Pilson, Bill Leverty, and Nikki Sixx are just a few of the cool cats who were kind enough to grant me exclusive interviews.
Online, I wrote for Cinezine, Rocknet, and Film Threat Weekly. I also conducted a series of Interviews Askew for Kevin Smith's website, which can still be found here: http://www.viewaskew.com/interviews/index.html
My old Lollipop Magazine profile contains links to many of my contributions there: http://www.lollipop.com/article.php3?content=pages/aboutus/m ichaelmccarthy.html
I am not presently writing for any magazines, so, no, I'm afraid I can't make you famous. That said, interested magazines may feel free to contact me.
My first zine was a horror zine called The End, featuring my short stories, poetry and artwork. I also contributed to Quib's popular Death By Tire Iron zine, otherwise known simply as D.B.T.I. Quib and I previously collaborated on the famous underground comic book Raiders.
I have written over 20 original screenplays and two novels, Becoming Madonna and Reckoning Daze. I also write lyrics and poems. And I journal. Often. ("Prolific" is the first word my friends use to describe me.)
I am my own worst critic.
My appetite for new music is insatiable, yet I love finding brilliant albums that I have to listen to again and again and again.
I've been a vegetarian since 1993.
I prefer foreign films, especially French. Indie flicks are usually cool, too, except when they're trying too hard to be indie.
I don't believe in guilty pleasures because I don't feel guilty about any of my pleasures.
I like rapid-fire, caffeinated conversations that go on and on for hours and hours and hours. (And I'll try to sound more eloquent if we should ever speak.)
I used to be 5'11", but now I'm 5'8". How is this possible? I have a severe case of degenerative disc disease. It's affected 7 levels of my spine thus far. (Herniated discs, ruptured discs, osteoarthritis, facet joint disease, you name it...)
I also have neuropathy in my right leg that makes me walk with a cool limp like House M.D. (Yes, I have a cane!) And a really bad case of fibromyalgia. And have I mentioned that I'm bipolar?
So, I'm not very much fun to be around, I suppose. But, hey, at least I'm honest. You see so many people here pretending to be hip and fun when they're really depressed and boring. (I might be depressed, but I'm not boring!) Actually, people seem to like having me around. They say I'm amusing. They also enjoy the pleasure of my conversation. Seriously!
ONE OF MY MORE RECENT DECOUPAGE NOTEBOOK COVER COLLAGES...

I would like to make new friends. Especially people who share my passion for foreign and independent films and music from around the globe. I'd also like to meet people who enjoy reading, writing and karaoke. (I could do without people who speak constantly of politics.) People to see movies and hang out in cafés with. And an agent to sell my screenplays and novels would be fantastic!

I don't send out many bulletins, so please subscribe to my blog if you'd like to get to know me.

Two collages that I made exclusively with clippings from Nylon magazine's 2007 music issue...

Remember: Not all angels are saints...

I do not approve comments that are basically advertisements for you or your band or your art show, etc. Send out all of the bulletins you want, and post whatever you want on YOUR My Space, but please don't try to sell your stuff on mine.

Music:

"Hey baby, can you bleed like me?"

-garbage

I originally alphabetized this list using livejournal's interests field, hence all of the bands beginning with "The" being under "T" instead of whatever follows. In other words, The Killers would be under the letter "T," not "K." Likewise, Kylie Minogue would be under "K" for Kylie, as opposed to "M" for Minogue.
