FLOW

"Lo normal"

About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4

For FLOW, "Lo Normal" ("The Usual") is to reinvent themselves and to turn up when everyone least expects it. "Lo Normal" for Flow is conceiving a record into a melting pot of varied styles that, by passing through their own special filter, gather meaning and coherency. They did it in 2000 with "Sensazione" and they do it again in 2006. With "Lo Normal", Flow return totally renewed, with a creativity that 'overflows' in many different directions yet maintains the familiar, glorious taste of a classic.
The renovation of Flow extends in this record with a new lineup. It was originally recorded by Fernando Vacas, Juano Belmonte and Manuel Espinosa, the heart of the group since Flow began. But after the tragic departure of the latter, the group considered calling it quits. But starting from scratch with new band members, new ideas and a new enthusiasm, and encompassing the launch of their own record label, Eureka Music, Flow was reborn. And this is lucky for us, as we now can further enjoy and sample the talents of Eurekas main producer and arranger, Fernando Vacas.
To explain the enormous quantity of musical ideas that converge on this record, its best to start from the end: listen to "Se va el avion", a pop symphony in 3 movements, that begins somewhere in between Sparks and Spacemen 3, and continues on like a DFA remix, finishing with a piano passage a la Satie. An immense eclecticism that somehow seems to make all the sense in the world, this is a song driven record, whose songs take on different shapes and sizes throughout: folk, psychodelia, pop, rock, jazz, disco and funk. Between 'Nos Separa un taxi', a short, french flavoured pop gem, and 'Cras, cras, cras', a loose and unhinged instrumental, there can be any variety of distances travelled. For Flow, "Lo Normal" is that music lovers are ready and willing to experiment one day, and yet can still have carefree fun the next day. For example, "Lo Normal" is to unwittingly hum a Pavement-like tune ('Trio LalaLa'), as much as it is to get intellectually stimulated by homage to cult class heroes such as Van Dyke Parks or Jim ORourke ('Por LHopital').
If Archimedes raised his head and listened to "Lo Normal", he surely would shout, Eureka!
