Hunter Thompson was good, Neal Stephenson writes some good sci-fi, as do Asimov and P.K. Dick. Frank Herbert was a great writer. Aldous Huxley was pretty cool too. H.P. Lovecraft is great for horror that isn't scary and immensely descriptive literary scenes of "indescribable horror." Edgar Allan Poe is pretty sweet too. I also like reading Thomas Jefferson stuff because despite being a literary vandal when it came to the founding documents of the USA he was a cool dude. Eastern & Western philosophy.
