About Me

"Godfather of disco" dies

Disco purveyor Mel Cheren, known for his work with New York City’s Paradise Garage, as well as an activist on several levels, passed away on Friday, December 7th.Cheren is often referred to as The Godfather of Disco, integrated quite heavily in the dance scene and gay culture.Paradise Garage began in disco’s heyday in 1975 and was host to countless legendary DJs and performers, including Larry Levan and Grace Jones. Paradise Garage closed in 1987.Cheren also ran West End Records, home to Arthur Russell’s Loose Joints, Larry Levan and Blaze, among others. In 2003, Cheren penned the autobiography My Life and the Paradise Garage, a heartfelt first-hand look at the destruction of the music culture from the AIDS epidemic, which, sadly, is the very thing that ended his own life. A memorial is planned for January 21, 2008, the date of his birthday. Find out more information on Mel Cheren on the links below.

Music:

Circoloco have had a busy winter. The crew have been touring for the last 6 months, converting the planet into one big crazy circus with their travels, whether it be a month long tour of South America or a monthly residency in Leeds. With their band of merry jocks, including Tania Vulcano, Luciano and Cirillo, the crew have spent the winter circumnavigating the globe spreading their particular brand of chaos and total hedonism to loyal fans and the previously uninitiated alike.Well it looks now as though summer won't be any quieter, besides flinging open the doors again to the now legendary venue that is DC10 every Monday from the 3rd June, the crew have just announced the icing on the cake of what has already been an incredible year; their own 2 day festival in home town Rome.On July 12th and 13th (Thursday and Friday respectively) Circoloco will bring possibly the heftiest line up ever to the city and if you were looking for a time to take a trip to visit… that time would be now.Say's Circoloco's Andrea Pellino:"Rome is my home city and I've been making parties there since 89 until 93, around in all the different clubs, before Circoloco in Ibiza. We always made Circoloco parties in Rome but we stopped 2 years ago when we finished the relationship with Goa, and now I've been waiting for 2 years, organising and planning for this party, planning for something big."The line up would surely have taken 2 years planning alone: Day 1 will welcome the inimitable DJ Shadow, who wowed crowds at the Wireless Festivals in the UK last summer and now makes his first visit to Rome, alongside Circoloco stalwarts and awesome twosome Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano. Straight from Ibiza also come Tania, Pedro and new kid on the block Matthias Tanzmann.Day 2, is no less enormous, when sometime DC10 visitor Carl Cox lines up alongside DC10 resident Timo Mass and Circoloco furniture piece Cirillo, as well as Germany's Zip, hot tip of 07 Davide Squillace and Argenis Brito live.Huge names, but something that Andrea is well aware of; Circoloco works best on a more intimate level and he intends to keep it that way. "The line-up we have is great, we could easily make a bigger party with this line-up, with the DJs we have; we could have maybe 5 or 7 thousand people but we prefer to make it more special and keep it around 3000 for each party, will be better." Good news for all those who prefer a little room to move around and the venue itself? Well that's another story..."The venue is incredible. It's an museum built in the 1900's in a part of the city called Eur, it's like the heart of the city, when you arrive to the place and see this huge white building, its just amazing. The main room inside has big columns coming down and it's just beautiful. Outside there is also lots of space; the idea was always to do something very special."

Movies:

Every Monday morning from June to October hedonistic clubbers are lured to DC10 for the carnival-like atmosphere of Circo Loco, the all-day long afterhours started by Italians Antonio and Andrea Pelino back in 1999. Circo Loco means crazy circus and it's the party where the beautifully wasted come together in Ibiza. Besides the colourful characters (some might even say caners) who make Circo Loco what it is, there are also its resident DJs who spin underground house and techno alongside the international guest DJs who hound Andrea and co. for an invitation to play.
