MONGREL LIFE

About Me

From the soaring highs of the bagpipes to the deep pulse of the Australian didgeridoo, two Aussie siblings, Hamish and Angus Richardson, have defied convention and proudly invented 'mongrel' music. "We reckon it's a great metaphor for our sound and all the mixed influences that have brought us to this point," says elder brother and co-founder Hamish Richardson. "In Australia, a mongrel is a loveable, loyal, tough mutt of a dog - you know, the kind of pup that could claim half the canine population as its parents..."

Band Members: Angus Richardson: Vocals, Bagpipes, Didgeridoo Dave "Dalbo" Allen: Drums and Percussion DidgeriDrew Reid: Didgeridoo and Keys
Influences: What were your early musical influences? Angus: Mum was always playing the piano while dad sang old music hall songs and Aussie folk songs or 'bush ballads'. Elvis was King in our house when we were growing up; Queen was Queen and the Beatles were the four princes. Trailblazer bands like Radiohead and Linkin Park have had a great influence on us and a real vindication that out-of-the-box CAN be viable."
Sounds Like: How do people respond to this organic music? Hamish: BROTHER first-timers often approach the band, put a fist to their chest and say: 'I really felt it here'. Nothing defines our music better than that. If you're a performing musician - or any kind of artist - who could ask for a better reaction than that? We get some out-there descriptions of the music: ‘imagine U2 with didges..’; ‘Beck meets early Peter Gabriel’; ‘the bastard sons of Crowded House and Midnight Oil’ so we know we’re getting it right if that’s the kind of reaction our sound is getting.Inspired Hoopdancer Spiral moves like no other to BROTHER at Earthdance 2006 website: www.spiralhoopdance.com
