Why make a name for yourself, use the one you already have... J. Samuels

About Me

My name is Jamiyl Samuels. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, though I spent a lot of my young life in St. Catherine Jamaica, West Indies. I have a passion for Hip Hop, Reggae music and creative writing. In 1990, as a sixth grade student at Phillipa Schuyler Intermediate School, my journalism teacher loaned me the screenplays to Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" and "Mo Better Blues". I had already seen the films, but reading the screenplay brought the movies back to life in my head. From that moment on, I knew writing screenplays was what I wanted to do. My first foray into sciptwriting was an action film called "Renegade". The script was pretty advanced for a 12 year old, however I stopped writing after 42 pages to pursue a career in music in 1991. It wasn't until I took a Screenplay writing class in my first semester of Graduate school in 2004, that I became inspired to write scripts again. I am a die hard Hip Hop fan and pride myself on my knowledge of the culture. My favorite groups/artists are A Tribe Called Quest (y'all need to get back together - stop playing!), The Roots, Run-DMC, EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, Common, LL Cool J - that will give you an idea where my head is at (Golden Age of Hip Hop all day '88-'94!). I am honored to be contributing to WQHT Hot97's website. Check out the latest issue of The Ave for some of my contributions. I am currently a writer for Rap Fanatic Magazine (pick up latest issue on newstands now), and a contributing writer for Allhiphop.com. Feel free to check out my blogs for some of my thoughts and rants on pop culture. Keep Your Eyes Open is a motto I have been using since my rhyming days (I still got it - don't sleep!), and I will leave that with you. Determined individuals always make it.
