Chika is the Spanglishterm for homegirl. Born and
raised in Brooklyn, Chika is a study in stereotypes and
contrasts. Since her first steps, thanks to her musically
rich Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage, she's been in
love with the rhythms of her parents Caribbean music.
Her mother and uncle were both local championship Salsa
dancers whose trophies adorn the walls of the family's
apartment. Chika herself began performing in neighborhood
talent showcases as early as the third grade.Her early years in life were tainted by pain and suffering
and finds music less of a vocation and more of an outlet.
Chika was a witness to her mothers addiction to
narcotics and alcohol. At the age of 16, she seemed
destined to perpetually underachieve; she gave birth to her
first child. She had experienced too much too soon and this
is where her story gets interesting. What might have
spelled the end for many young girls was simply a new
beginning for the remarkably resilient Chika.She was introduced to, Fragancia, of the Latin group
DLG and, later to, Sergio George, a.k.a. Sir George, the
legend and performed at his label, WEA Latina. She linked
up with DLG and has toured Japan, Spain, Columbia, Peru,
Bolivia, Honduras, and Costa Rica. She helped write, and
was featured on, DLGs last album, Volvere. She has also
wrote and performed on Sir Georges live album at Manhattan Center,
which, featured Gilberto Santa Rosa, Sergio Vargas, and
Victor Manuel. She was also featured in the Magazine, Urban Latino.
Upon the break up of DLG, she was left in the dark.This is what Chika has to say about her music; "Music is an amazing medium. I can
express myself and convert the tears from my past into a
beautiful career. The hardships that once isolated me can
connect me intimately, and universally, to many people in
similar situations. I feel that honesty is the best policy
when expressing oneself through the medium of music; you
bare your soul".Luscious vocals over thumping tracks are her specialty. You
root for her to succeed through her lyrics of life. Chika
