In 1956, Mansurian studied at the Yerevan Music Academy and completed his PhD at the Komitas State Conservatory. The Lebanese-born Armenian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, and vocal works that have been performed throughout the world. He taught modern music theory at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory from 1967-86. Mansurian was the director of the Komitas Conservatory in the 1990s. In a short time he became one of Armenia's leading composers, establishing strong creative relationships with international performers and composers such as Valentin Silvestrov, Arvo Prt, Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Andr Volkonsky and many more...
His honors include two First prizes in the All-Union competition in Moscow. In 1966, for Partita; and in 1968, for Four Hayrens
