Who is General Antranik?
The first name in the Armenian struggle for national liberation in modern times is Andranik Toros Ozanian. He was born in historic Shabin-Karahisar. Andranik was destined more, perhaps, than any of the other Armenian revolutionaries, to provide leadership, rationality, acumen, prudence, and effectiveness to Armenia's rising up against the brutal Ottoman oppression. After losing his wife and son at an early age, he joined the Armenian freedom movement in the Ottoman Empire.
During World War I, he participated in the Caucasus Campaign and was appointed as general of the Armenian volunteer units of the Russian army. He participated in 20 different offensives where he gained fame due to his courage and the tactics he developed in order to defeat the opposing forces.
He was the commanding officer of the Armenian volunteer units who participated in the defense of the Armenian population during the period of ethnic cleansing of Anatolia carried out by the Ottoman government. On May 6, 1915 he helped the Van Resistance take control of the region of Van. He was also the commander of the battalion that took the city of Bitlis from the Ottoman forces that was under control of Mustafa Kemal. Between March and April of 1918, he was the governor of the Administration for Western Armenia (The Armenian provisional government with the progressive autonomous region that initially set up around Lake Van).
With his military supremacy, he made it possible for the Armenian population of Van to escape from the Ottoman Army to Eastern Armenia that was being controlled by Russia at the time. He made it possible for tens of thousands of Armenians to flea from their homeland without falling victim to the Armenian Genocide.
Who is Monte Melkonian?
Monte spent his entire adult life working for justice and defending Armenians in Iran, Lebanon, and Armenia. Monte is widely acknowledged to be one of the individuals most responsible for re-forging Nagorno Karabagh's fighters into a disciplined force that defended the land against overwhelming odds.
Monte completed his bachelor’s degree from U.C.Berkeley in less than three years. The department of archaeology at Oxford University sought him out for graduate work. However, Monte traveled to Iran, where he taught English and participated in the movement to overthrow the Shah.
In the fall of 1978, Monte made his way to Beirut, in time to participate in the defense of the Armenian quarter against rightist attacks.
In 1990 Monte finally arrived in Armenia. He focused his energy on Karabagh. "If we loose [Karabagh]," the bulletin of the Karabagh Defense Forces quoted him as saying, "we turn the final page of our people’s history." He believed that, if Azeri forces succeeded in deporting Armenians from Karabagh, they would advance on Zangezur and other regions of Armenia. Thus, he saw the fate of Karabagh as crucial for the long-term security of the entire Armenian nation. Ever true to his convictions, he fought in the Shahumian region north of Karabagh for three months in the fall of 1991. Forces with which he fought helped to recapture several key Armenian villages from Azeri forces.
On June 12, 1993 Monte Melkonian was killed defending his homeland. After his death the president of the Republic of Armenia declared him a National Hero, and he was awarded the highest military honors of Nagorno Karabagh and the Republic of Armenia, including the Military Cross, First Degree and the Golden Eagle medal.
