PHON is NOT easy listening. A PHON concert has something ultimate about it. The singer`s performance is madly neurotic, the lyrics are crazed and the atmosphere is truly apocalyptic.
Originally from Hamburg, PHON were an essential feature of the German club scene at the beginning of the millennium. Those who saw the band then, on those darkest nights where upturned collars and cigarettes were essential, will know that PHON cut a deep impression.
There has been a quiet period for the band while the lead singer and mastermind, Thomas Völker, has been in self imposed exile in southern Europe. Summer 2006 sees PHON re-emerge, this time rocking and shocking stages across the capital, Berlin. Expect to see Völker doing the unexpected, riding high on a wall-of-noise as he and the band give it everything they`ve got like there`s no tomorrow. Perhaps there isn`t after a PHON gig.
PHON combines elements of blues and noise rock, often minimal, sketched-in riffs and outlined harmonies are driven by a pure groove.
While the band straddles the ground between early Butthole Surfers and the exact noise rock of Helmet, Volker writhes and contorts, lets rip with guttural screams, and invites his amazed audience to join him.

PHON kommen ursprünglich aus Hamburg und waren am Anfang des Jahrtausends ein fester Bestandteil der norddeutschen Clubszene. Wer sie damals bei einem ihrer vielen Clubgigs, für die man sofort einen großen Kragen, Zigaretten und vor allem ganz schnell tiefe Nacht braucht, erlebt hat weiß noch heute, dass sie sich dort ziemlich gut gemacht haben.
Die Erklärung, warum es dann in den letzten Jahren etwas still war um die Band, ist leicht gefunden: Sänger und PHON-Mastermind Thomas Völker befand sich im selbst gewählten Exil in Südeuropa.
Nun haben sich PHON neu aufgestellt und das direkt in der Hauptstadt Berlin. Ab Anfang 2006 werden sie dann auch wieder auf den Clubbühnen Präsenz zeigen. Mit alten und vor allem auch mit neuen Songs wird die Besucher dabei ungefähr folgendes erwarten:
Sänger Thomas Völker hantiert vor dichter Soundwand fingerfertig mit Mikro- und Megaphon herum und schafft es dabei sich zu verausgaben, als gäbe es kein Morgen. PHON befinden sich rastlos auf der Jagd nach überraschenden Momenten komme was da wolle und wenn sie fertig sind, muss man nach Hause gehen.
PHON spielen eindrucksvoll mit Elementen des Noiserock. Die Stilmittel sind reduziert, manchmal auf ein paar Minimalriffs oder angedeutete Harmonien oft auf den blanken Groove.
