The Eighties Are Back (And They Want More Coke)!

About Me

That's Mister to you: www.joelrane.com

My Interests

Writing, good (not "interesting") art, fine dining with a movie (or two), hiking and other "desert sports" (18 and older), not getting ripped off, your basic Continental living . Vive le vive!

I'd like to meet:

People who know big words but don't use them constantly, fellow Californios, Califa expats or Europeans waiting hopefully for "the revolution", writers and artists and other obnoxious creative types...unless you want to complain about your "blocks", which is terribly boring. Let's have a nice drinkie-poo instead. ..

The Web's Original Travel Blog .

Music:

Classical, New Wave, minimalism, jazz, Dixieland, be-bop, rock, punk, rockabilly, country...hmm, I guess anything that doesn't suck, especially if my friends did it: Supreme Beings of Leisure , Mme. Julie Bonnie , the Absinthe Glow , Snakes in Eden , etc. That's enough plugs for you, now GET A JOB. Oh yeah, and NO GAMELAN.

Movies:

The Magic Christian or anything else by Terry Southern (including, yeah, End of the Road ), The Tenth Victim and anything else by Elio Petri , anything by Rainer Werner Fassbinder ( Berlin Alexanderplatz coming to DVD in 2007!), The State of Things , film noir, anything by Robert Altman , Japanese girl gang pop, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and anything else with Warren Oates , Nouvelle Vague, etc., etc., etc. etc.; or basically any over-stylized Italian horror/sci fi/spy genre films, black & white American thrillers, weird 1960s psychedelic comedy, anything from the later "Golden Age" (1965 - 1985) and pretty much nothing after 1985. And NO oppressive Scandinavian or Russian cinema, yeecch.

Maybe you're looking for MY movies ?

Television:

KILL YOUR TELEVISION Just kidding, TV is the medium of the future (where's my streaming Internet channel?), so I'm glad I'll be dead by 2050 and won't find out. In the meantime: Vice TV

Books:

Right now, A Crack in the Edge of the World by Simon Winchester, and Rebels, Turn Out Your Dead by Michael Drinkard; think "Monty Python" does the American Revolution. If you want to understand why we'll never succeed in Iraq, read Generation Kill by Evan Wright. For more taste treats, see my writer's page !

Heroes:

The woman who stood up to Enron, scientists, most authors, any musician, a few artists (although PLEASE SHUT UP!), people who raise their own kids, the astronauts murdered by NASA and the Soviets , and all the people who've been put to death or thrown in the clink for their beliefs.
