In battle, they are ferocious and hard-nosed, willing to explore the depths of it's mortality to get the job done.Ronnie Kerner is the personification of the rottweiler spirit.Born April 8, 1972, "Ronnie the Rottweiler" traded residences between Manhattan's Upper East Side and Brooklyn growing up. Kerner was raised with Jewish and Italian old school contingencies. By the age of five, his biological father abandoned Ronnie & divorced his mother. "It brought my mother and I close, which was important since we had nothing but each other at the time." His father would re-emerge into his life periodically with presents of lies and false-hopes that would become the base of his issues with self-esteem, anger, and authority.When Ronnie was seven years old, a man came into his life courting his mother. The man later married his mother, legally adopting Ronnie along the way. Ronnie took the surname Kerner as his own. After a period of transition, Ronnie came to accept this man as his father.Ronnie's inner demons began to catch up with him at 12. Looking for family anywhere he could find it, Ronnie joined his first street gang. Kerner's aptitude for street life quickly garnered him a reputation, earning Ronnie an elevated status over his peers. Street violence became a regular part of his life, bolstered by his love for fighting."I actually enjoyed fighting. I don't know if it was an outlet of if I loved getting hit for punishment I thought I deserved. I don't know, and I'm still trying to figure it out to this day."By the age of 16, Kerner was a serious criminal who survived day to day life at the expense of society. His acumen for street brawling did not go unnoticed by nefarious individuals who looked to use his talents to advance their agendas. From there, Kerner graduated from small-time thug to the major leagues of crime.Kerner relates, "I couldn't look at myself in the mirror anymore after realizing what I'd become. I used to break stuff in my house so I didn't have to see my face. Anything that had a reflection, like a picture or a TV screen, I would break it. I always had to look over my shoulder. When people are trying to kick in your door and you don't know if it's law enforcement or people trying to 'do you up', that's a crazy way to live."Desperate for money to survive, Kerner utilized the only skill he believed himself to be adept at to earn a living: He became a fighter on the underground circuit. Fighting in obscure surroundings that varied from gyms to warehouses, even church basements, Ronnie quickly adjusted to the gritty surroundings and began to thrive."You had a ring and a ref, but it was low budget and there were no medicals. It was just a kid from the neighborhood versus another kid from the neighborhood with people placing bets on you. It would be boxing, but you were brawling."In no time, Kerner was seen a highly-gifted knockout artist and fan favorite, amassing a 17-1 record with all of his victories coming by way of knock out on the "smoker" circuit.In the twisted sub-realm of underground fighting, opportunities arose for Kerner to take "side jobs" for people in the market for hired muscle.The demands of street life began to take their toll on Ronnie, which drew Kerner into his darkest, most challenging foe: Drugs.Substance abuse became a welcome escape from the life-and-death monotony for Kerner. "You go out of your head and develop a false sense of security," Kerner said. "I didn't care about eating or anything like that. My whole life was doing dirt and getting high. It was a vicious cycle."It took hitting rock bottom for Kerner to finally say enough and get the help he needed. With Ronnie addled by paranoia, sociopathic tendencies, and a general lack of concern for his own life, a group of concerned friends & family intervened on Kerner's behalf and urged him to seek treatment."I went to my Mom and Dad and they saw I needed help. My parents live on the seventeenth floor. I put the midsection of my body over the ledge of the terrace and with my Mom screaming, I left it in God's hands whether I should live or die. When I hit that level, I realized that if I don't get help, I'm going to die."In 2003, Kerner checked himself into the CARON Foundation Drug Rehabilitation Center. "It was a reality check. Rehab brought me back to the bare necessities of humanity, learning how to love, feel, cry, and be secure in myself. I found out what the root was that made me turn to drugs in the first place."Kerner has been completely drug-free since 2003 and intends to stay that way for the rest of his life. He is now an endorser of the very foundation he credits with saving his life.As Kerner re-emerged as a new man, he realized he had unfinished business. "My Dad told me, 'Imagine where you could've been if you just kept boxing.'" Those thoughts registered hard on Kerner, who resolved himself to return to one of the few healthy outlets he had ever known, The Sweet Science. "I picked up after years of neglecting my God-given talent," Ronnie reminisces. "Part of sobriety was realizing who I truly am, which is a fighter."Leading the charge in his corner, Team Rottweiler consists of BYG Management, headed by his wife Heather Kerner. Former heavyweight contender "Gentleman" Gerry Cooney leads Team Rottweiler. "Gerry is the Joe Torre of Team Rottweiler," Kerner explains. "He's the angel on my shoulder." Former middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo also shares duties as chief second in his corner. Paul Vario is Kerner's strength and conditioning coach, Sal Attaguile is Ronnie’s bag and ring work guy, & Kerner's cousin Eugene Ferrara is the team doctor.Looking forward, Kerner's goal is to bring back that extra spark to boxing that is has long been missing. "I want to bring boxing back to what it used to be and what I know it can be. Boxing needs more personalities. It needs more than just paper champion or fights between two guys in different weight classes that go on to make money off the public. I'm not about that. I'm about bringing boxing back to the people."These days, aside from his career as a licensed boxer, Ronnie moonlights as a promoter. The sole proprietor of Rottweiler Promotions Inc., Kerner also owns a 3% share of Cedric Kushner's Gotham Boxing.Now fully grown with the maturity that accrues with life experience, Kerner views everyday in a new light. With a renewed sense of inner peace and hope, "Ronnie the Rottweiler" is proof that you can always teach an old dog new tricks."You always need to remember that no matter how bad you think life is, it can always get worse. You gotta be thankful everyday that you wake up. Anybody can accomplish their goals if I can do it.
