David Tua vs Cerrone Fox
DAVID InterVeiw With POLO BOXING
Team Tua came out fighting last night as critics prepared to blast the credentials of David Tua's next opponent.Tua will fight ballooned-up cruiserweight Tim Williamson a fighter who has been inactive for 21 months in Michigan next month.Tua impressive in his last two wins against Saul Montana and Cerrone Fox had hoped for a better opponent for his outing at the Kewadin Casino but with many ranked heavyweights refusing to fight him, he has had to settle for the Pittsburgh southpaw."Is it the fight we hoped for? Of course not," Tua's trainer Roger Bloodworth told Sunday News from Tua's training camp in Arizona."It's frustrating but it's part of the boxing game."If I had an up-and-coming undefeated boxer and a promoter said ..How about David Tua?' I'd say ..What's my boy going to gain except for maybe getting hurt?'"If you understand that you understand why we take the fights we can get."Critics like former NZ heavyweight champ Lance Revill and former light-welterweight champ-turned TVNZ pundit Billy Graham have been at the forefront of attacks on Tua in recent months. They have questioned Tua's ability, fitness and opponents."Those guys," said Bloodworth, "tell them to glove up and step up. I don't care about them."I only care about Dave continuing to fight regularly. David is ready to fight anyone out there, right now."If one of the champions wants to give us a shot, we're ready to take it."Tua's quest to fight for his first title shot since his unsuccessful bout against Lennox Lewis in 2000 is being sandbagged by the heavyweight division's latest trend run and hide.Of the four current champions Wladimir Klitschko (IBF and IBO belts), Ruslan Chagaev (WBA), Oleg Maskaev (WBC) and Sultan Ibragimov (WBO) only the last has a fight planned, against Evander Holyfield in Moscow on October 14.And Tua's punching power (42 career knockouts) and record (he's beaten four champions John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, Michael Moorer and Maskaev mean he's very much an unwanted opponent."You can't even call out a champion at the moment 'cause they're not fighting," Bloodworth said."So, if the champs aren't fighting, the next thing you want is an elimination bout with the winner getting a title shot."We'd take that tomorrow. But with every top-line fight politics comes into play, along with money."A lot of things need to happen for us to get a shot. To win a title you need to be ready and you need some luck."So, we are going to take care of what we can take care of."I'm keeping David busy so that when the opportunity does come, he'll be ready."I don't want to see him sitting around idly doing nothing. I don't care if he's fighting Humpty Dumpty because as long as he is preparing right for the fight he'll be improving something."I don't want to see him go backwards."And the thing that will make him go backwards is inactivity."Team Tua's strategy is an obvious one stay busy and eventually the sanctioning bodies will have to take notice of him.Said Bloodworth: "What's the alternative? Give Dave four months off because we can't get (World No 17) Calvin Brock into the ring?"All that would do is take us back to square one."We're content, not satisfied. We'll wait our turn and we'll be ready when they come calling."Maori Television has live coverage of the Tua-Williamson bout on October 19.
THE TUA MONTANA KNOCKOUT
David Tua knocked out Mexican champion Saul Montana in the first round of their scheduled 10-round heavyweight fight at Salt Lake City in Utah yesterday.Aucklander Tua took just two minutes 15 seconds to deck Montana with two left hooks to the jaw.Montana, 36, was going down after the first shot to the jaw and the second sent him sprawling on the canvas."This is not a comeback, this is the continuation of my Tua of Duty," Samoan-born Tua said. His American camp said he would fight again on September 7 and should have another crack at the world title in six months time.Tua, 34, took his record to 48 wins, 41 by knockouts, one draw and three losses.Montana, weighing 109.76kg and with a 2.5cm reach advantage, took a 48-14 (win-loss) record, 42 by knockouts, record into the packed South Towne Exposition Centre yesterday (NZ time).Tua was at his best fighting weight of 107.72kg.Tua's American trainer Roger Bloodworth said he was pleased Tua had heeded their plan."He did exactly what was asked of him, he showed patience, used his jabs and his right hand," Bloodworth said."Everyone knows about David's left hook, though that was the king punch again today. He's got a predictable left hook but you've got to be smart and boxing intelligent. You have to know when to use your power."Bloodworth said as Tua had stayed out of the ring for a large part of three years he needed to keep active."He's going to have another fight in three weeks in Michigan and we want him to have a fight every month in the next few months until we get him a world title challenge.Montana said he underestimated Tua's power.Well past his best, the Mexican had intended to end the fight early and in the process left himself open to Tua's lethal left hook.Tua said he was thankful to the enormous support he got from home in the lead-up to the fight."I love it when I get these messages from home. I'll have a couple of days off and get back straight into the gym."Ringside commentators who have been following Tua's career since well before his unsuccessful world title challenge against Lennox Lewis in 2000, said Tua looked "genuinely happy" after a long time. They said Montana made the mistake of trying to go toe-to-toe with Tua.Montana came out firing with both hands and kept changing his stance to a southpaw. He connected with several rights to the body and head, whereas Tua landed a thudding left to the body before the knockout.Tua then cushioned a right cross from the Mexican who at that stage left himself open while trying to land the big one.Tua sprung back with his left hook to the jaw and Montana was heading to the canvas when a second left to the same spot on the jaw came with the "goodnight" message."

ABOUT ME
David TuaBiography: David Tua "The Tuaman" has come a long way since growing up on the tiny island of Fateatiu in Western Samoa, which boasts a population of 300. From the time he was a boy, his father’s stern persistence led him to the sport of boxing, and it was the ring that he would one day find his true calling in life. Tua’s family moved to New Zealand when he was 13 and got mixed up with the wrong crowd. However, boxing seemingly got him out of trouble as he joined a local boxing club that took up most of his time. Tua worked hard at boxing and quickly began to win various championships. In 1992, at the age of 19, Tua captured the bronze medal in the Barcelona Olympics. Since turning professional in 1992, Tua has compiled Tua's record now improves to 47-3-1 record with 40 KO’s and has held numerous belts.
