Hailing from secluded, Okfuskee Oklahoma (Woody Guthries home town), gave The Deacon, Donnie Dim an interesting take on music to say the least. The world of mainstream popular music did not enter into his frame of reference until his formative years. Young Donnie grew up in the truest American singer songwriter traditions singing in the church choir. Influenced early on by such artists Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, and Hank Williams, Donnie took to the road at an early age.
By the time he was 16 his unique ability to boil down complicated issues into heart felt lyrics, and everyman hooks had him playing in front of packed east coast coffee houses ala, Dylan but 30 years after the revolution.
Then things got interesting.
Exposed and attracted to the raw emotion of Punk, Dim pursued a hard rocking sarcasm and pointed rhetoric that distanced him from his folk roots. Never really caring to be accessible to a pop audience Big Big Hits was dark, sinister, and a hell of a lot of fun. Following in the tradition of Nick Cave crossed with a Pere Ubu, The Deacon, as he was now being called, was gaining a loyal underground following. His riveting, existential and, absurdist monologues, brought a touch of the punk rock preacher to the grunge filled 90s. Experimental to say the least, mental being the active part, Dim brought a twisted sensibility, challenging audiences out of the mundane and into the Magic.
After going underground for the better part of this decade, Donnie Dim has re-emerged with Sparkle Magic. A stripped down acoustic offering that incorporates Dims full palette of experience. Teamed with talented 9 Below Zeros virtuoso Tim T-Bone Bennington, Donnie Dim and Sparkle Magic have stretched the limits of Americana and have taken us into the subtle realm of Expericana with Circle of Doom. Dim's gravely Tom Waits delivery is juxtaposed by the sweet and haunting offering of Benningtons 5 fingered guitar picking. The combination provides magic hooks that will keep Dims twisted thoughts in your mind for days: From Murder Tonight " I am a man named Miniscule/ I got the ravings of a jet black soul/ I got the smile of a urinal/ you know?"
Sparkle Magic's rhythm section is lead by the imposing stature of bass player, big Swede, Loki Fuzmagor. Fuzmagor deftly weaves a hypnotic spell that is, deft, soulful, forceful, and has a narrative quality.
On drums is Tyberius Monk, who Dim claims to have met on a drug induced spiritual trek across the Andes. Monk contributes an energy that helps suck you in, keeps you inside Sparkle Magics special kind of neurosis.
Cleveland's Scene Magazine's article had a quote describing a Sparkle Magic as "Shock and awe with candy bars and silly string."
There is an unsinkable bent optimism fuels Donnie Dim's ponderings and a midnight blue in his lyrics speaks a truth that can't be denied.
