My interests are all over the place. Travel, reading, movies, monkeys, burlesque, drive-ins, vaudeville, dining out, jet skiing, conversation, singing (I love to sing; no one, anywhere, loves to hear me, however), clubbing, lounge music from the 50s and 60s, mixing wacky cocktails, cooking, theme parties, kigurumix, found art... I can enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon riding a bike or riding a barstool.
I am looking to make new friends; I'm in my late thirties and everyone I know is married up (as am I--happily) and on the baby track (not so much). I respect their choices, but it also means that I've got few folks who'll respond with a rousing "Yes!" when I ask at 4:30 p.m. on a Tuesday if they're game to catch an 11 p.m. burlesque show at the Ottobar that night.
The kind of people I'm interested in meeting (male or female, gay or straight, black, white, older, younger--doesn't matter) are somewhat left of center. In keeping with the paradox, though, they're artistic types but with day jobs. They're capitalist by day, bohemian by night. Liberated but with boundaries, freewheeling yet pragmatic. Smart but goofy. You?
If you want to friend me, tell me why. Otherwise, I'll assume you're a p*ssy collector or a random band that hasn't even come close to examining what types of music I enjoy and you will be summarily denied.
Bottom line for me is "I don't know music, but I know what I like." If you can dance to it (ala Kirsty MacColl), I'll probably like it. If you can put on pearls and high heels and vacuum to it (ala Julie London), I'll probably like it. If you can chill out in an oversized lounge chair to it (ala Cafe del Mar), I'll probably like it. If you can beat your 'ho to it...maybe not quite so much. But maybe if the beatin' has a good beat...
I really, really enjoy movies. I don't necessarily like going to the movies, however. A person on a cell phone or ripping through candy wrappers or explaining the plot to their short-bus friend makes me all but homicidal. Exceptions include The Senator, The Charles and Bengie's Drive-In. Harold and Maude; Raising Arizona; Sex and Lucia; The Tune; Triplets of Belleville; Napoleon Dynamite; Donnie Darko; Tank Girl; MirrorMask; Wild at Heart, Fight Club, Stranger Than Fiction; Desperately Seeking Susan; all Harry Potters, Matrix, Rings, Star Wars (IV, V, VI are the ONLY ones that exist--la la la la I can't hear you, Jarjar) and Alien ('cept 3); Curse of the Wererabbit; Moonstruck; The Jerk; Young Frankenstein and the Producers (Zero M, thank you); Spinal Tap and anything Christopher Guest (Go Corky!). I can quote Monty Python (film and TV) extensively. That's just a sampling...
If you can tell me about the inner workings of The Apprentice, we are probably not gonna get along. Not to say that I'm anti-TV. I love Dexter, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Flight of the Conchords, Heroes, the L Word and all manner of Law & Order. I loathe commercials, so if I can't TiVo it, I'll wait 'til the DVD. Arrested Development, Black Books, Firefly, Futurama, Nip/Tuck, Ab Fab, Robot Chicken, Little Britain, the Office (original and new), Reno 911...
I've been running a book club for about nine years and one of the things I really like about it is that I've been compelled to read things I'd never have taken off the shelf. Sure, sometimes after reading it I say, "Yep, that's why I didn't want to read it. It was dumb!", but more often I think, "Wow, that was really fantastic. What if I'd missed it?!?" Among my favorites are Confederacy of Dunces, Geek Love, Life of Pi, Memoirs of a Geisha, Red Tent, Time Traveler's Wife and World War Z. Big fan of Anais Nin and Dorothy Parker. If you haven't read "The Wild Party," you are missing a treat. Anything Tom Robbins.
Being a Leo and an only child, I am of the overall belief that I am my own hero. People who are willing to try new things and take risks are my heroes. People who are kind yet strong are my heroes. People who are giving of themselves yet self-indulgent are my heroes. Okay, wait, am I wrong or does that translate to Josephine Baker?
