About Me

The player below contains a list of influences - some not the choicest of tracks I'm afraid, but were all I could find / all that was available. It ISN'T meant to be an exhaustive list; just wanted to list some influences etc.
There's ALSO a Backstreet Boys track (Inconsolable) at the top of the list that I sessioned on with guitar in July '06 for their 'Unbreakable' album; no, I'm NOT a fan of theirs ;-)) - it was merely something I got involved with doing at the time (see blogs above and text below for more details).
I'll add more tracks when I have the inclination, but these will suffice for now I'm sure! ;-))
I'm Jed and am an accomplished guitarist, bass player and a classically taught pianist and in '04 started playing saxophone again to. Presently involved in teaching, songwriting, producing and bits of session playing (see below and blog for some recent projects).
I hail from a very musical family (both sides), which now spans five generations and originally started my musical career aged 16 in the midst of the 'Madchester' scene in Manchester, UK. Developed my chops and experience very quickly, both live and in the studio due to being pulled into a couple of bands with guys who were between 4 and 7 years older than myself and were a LOT more experienced. Due to this, before I knew it, I'd managed to gain many months of studio experience and playing live and had mixed and produce my first full-band song in a professional 24-track studio by the tender age of 18 1/2!
However, this wasn't where I wanted to be musically: being brought up on a mixture of rock plus soul, funk, I also got introduced by my trombonist older brother to jazz rock / jazz fusion. By my mid teens I'd started to become immersed and absorbed in the likes of Weather Report, David Sanborn, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and all the various musicians who played with them who were had become key players in their own right (like ex-Miles Davis guitarists Mike Stern and John Scofield and bass player Marcus Miller etc).
Having returned to music in 2004 after a gap away from things, I’ve been involved in various projects – mainly pop stuff – but this has recently included some guitar arrangements and guitar playing on tracks for The Backstreet Boys' 'Unbreakable' album and a couple of songs (including one I co-wrote) for Liberty X (before they split!). I've also got stuff coming up songwriting (funk/soul/R&B material) with Coco Star (Fragma) - the singer of the No.1 hit Toca's Miracle / I Need A Miracle, as well as a jazz fusion project which will include ex-Level 42 Sax man, Krys Mach (you can hear Krys playing sax on ANY of Level 42's material from the 80s and early 90s).
There is also ongoing production work for up-coming bands and artists, both from home and abroad likes of Ed Napoli (see banner and top friends). Have also been a collaborator on the Los Angeles-based Auradrone Project (guitar and some bass) together with drummer, Bernard Galane.
When I get chance I hope to be working on music that I wake up with and walk around hearing in my head, as well as some covers of mainly funk / jazz fusion compositions by the likes of guitarists Mike Stern and John Scofield etc (the stuff I'll be doing with Krys Mach, see above). ;-)) This sort of material is the real me (and yes, the original material will be fully arranged compositions that I hear inside my head) and is mainly contemporary funk/fusion come ‘smooth’ jazz.
Here's a video of one of the covers I'll be doing with Krys on sax: 'Tipatinas' by Mike Stern. (The sound quality isn't very good on this you'll probably need to turn it up a bit! Plus Richard Bona's bass guitar is a bit to upfront (out-front mixing engineer not doing his job well at all!)
I’m presently one of the tutors and teach guitar, bass and piano at the world's first Roland Rockschool Academy in Cheshire, England, which has recently become Tameside Music Academy.
Here, we're proud to announce that our star pupil, 15 year-old Grant Kershaw - a grade 8 drummer whose been taught there from a beginner at aged 12 - has, for the second year running, been shortlisted for UK young drummer of the year 2008! We've now just recently got him started teaching his first pupil (one of a pair of brothers we both teach). Watch him in action below...if you think he's good here you should be in a room with him when he's going for it! ;-)) He's incredibly gifted, yet remains so humble and down-to-earth - he's not the slightest bit big-headed or egotistical, he's such a nice lad, and very mature for his age!
I’m also available for studio sessions, writing and producing at negotiable rates, depending upon budget and needs. Bear in mind also that any fees are for ANY combination of producing, writing OR session playing, and is irrelevant of whichever instrument or combination of instruments being sessioned on (unlike a lot of musician-producers, who will not play AND produce in the same recording session).
Please note btw that if you're to bring in pre-recorded tracks from computer-based music software such as Logic Pro, Cubase, Reason etc into Pro Tools Studio, please ensure that markers are placed at both the beginnings and ends of each track (which will all have to be of the same length), and that EACH individual track is then saved as a separate .WAV file. These can then be imported into Pro Tools and worked upon. (BANDS: Please note that you will need a budget for recording - the producer does NOT pay for the recording, please see blog entry.)
If I session on a commercial track, then I’d require any MCPS/PRS, BPI and PPL (previously PAMRA), releases to be included for sessions for performance royalty purposes on commercial releases, on top of any fee.
I can be contacted directly through this page for any studio, writing, producing or live work. If you wish to book lessons with me at the Roland Rockschool (or have me write and produce for you), please contact me through this page.
Although not formally endorsed, I’m a user of Fender and Martin (acoustic) guitars, D'Addarrio strings and uses both Marshall amps and Roland keyboards. Floor effects used include (an original tube model) Digitech BP8 for bass, plus various individual (mostly vintage) stomp boxes for guitar (please see pics) but is presently building up a rack system (less noise in studio especially!) which currently has an Oberheim GM400 digital signal processor at the helm...

In fact far too many to mention really!

David Sanborn and Marcus Miller playing 'Run For 'Cover' from the mid eigthies...this kind of stuff really influenced me BIG time...

GUITAR (no particular order): B.B. King; Jimi Hendrix; Nile Rogers; David Gilmour; Ritchie Blackmore; Gary Moore; Andy Summers; Joe Walsh; Mike Stern; Paul Jackson Jnr; Stevie Ray Vaughan; John Scofield; Frank Gambale; Alan Murphy; Eric Johnson; Matthias Jabs; Albert Lee; Dominic Miller; Steve Lukather; Steve Morse; Steve Vai; Joe Satriani...lots!

Steve Lukather, one of my all time fav guitarists, giving it rice some years ago. He's played on SO many people's music as a session artist and of course with his band TOTTO:

Some Gary Moore I found on YouTube to keep you entertained from 1997 (he's playing a HSS Strat on this - no Les Paul in sight)! This is a lovely piece to play (through a Marshall of course)! ;-))

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Wall of Denial live - 14 July '90

Eric Johnson...just watch the video...there's nothing more to be said really once he gets going...

BASS GUITAR (no particular order): Jaco Pastorius; Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller; Larry Graham; Niles Orsted-Pedersen; Darryl Jones; Mark King; Verdine White; James Jameson; Carol Kaye; Bernard Edwards; Roger Glover; Glenn Hughes; Pino Palladino; Sting...lots

Here's some of Mark King of Level 42 soloing just recently (AUGUST 2007) - just to show he (and Level 42) are still at it!

Here's Marcus Miller soloing - he's another BIG influence on my bass playing: here he's soloing on David Sanborn's 'Run For Cover' - one of my all time favourite tracks! ;-))

Sounds Like: My playing style and the music I write has quite a mix of influences and crosses a range of styles: Heavily steeped in the blues and funk, there's also a lot smooth jazz, AND heavy rock influence in there to, so quite a mix!

My GUITAR style is a kind of cross-over of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Eric Johnson, Gary Moore and Nile Rogers (if you can imagine that!) - a bluesy-funk style with sax-type phrasing and articulation…However I’ve learned loads of styles, so can deliver pretty much any kind of style, from the above through to Metallica-like, power chord-ridden grunt!

My bass playing is a very busy, funk style, like Mark King / Marcus Miller (and heavily influenced from Motown and 70s Funk etc) but again, can play pretty much any style...

Here's some footage of the amazing bass player Billy Sheehan soloing - later getting joined by the equally amazing Paul Gilbert on guitar near the end (see blog on him)...BRILLIANT! ;-P

Record Label: Darth Vader Records...or did I just make that up?
