blues 'n' boogie woogie piano

About Me

I started playing piano at the age of 3, being taught by my dad Laurie, who was a well respected blues guitarist in the East Yorkshire area. I was brought up to the sounds of Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Jools Holland, as well as blues piano legends such as Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, and Meade Lux Lewis, to mention but a few. I played my first live gig when I was about 9, and got the taste for it instantly. That was it, no longer did I want to be a pilot, or a train driver like a lot of kids my age, I'd decided. I wanted to be a musician like my dad. A few years went by, and I kept on practising and learning, sometimes for up to 10 hours a day. In 1997, my dad lost his battle with cancer, but I was determined to keep the music alive. I played in various bands throughout the country after then, from rock to jazz and blues, (some people even tried getting me into a punk band once, to put it politely, I said no!). I'm currently playing solo gigs at The Living Room in York and Leeds, as well as a few Dan Burnett band, and Rob Donnelly band gigs. I'm also on the lookout for new venues, so if you know somewhere that's good for gigging, or you're a promoter/booking agent, get in touch. DB
