Andy Bull is a 23 year old singer, songwriter and piano player from Sydney, but above all else Andy Bull is a voice. Reaching into a high register usually reserved for the Aretha Franklin's of the musical world, Andy's voice simultaneously expresses a singular purity and soulful intention that stands him apart from most performers of his generation.
Andy began his musical life as a young child playing on the parlor piano, pump organ and harpsichord his keyboard enthusiast father had collected through his travels. Soon eclipsing his father's own abilities at the piano, a number of crucial records came into Andy's life very early on - Carol King's Tapestry, Nas's Illmatic, Led Zeppelin's Led Zep II, A Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory, Neil Young's Harvest. It is the discovery of these records at a very early age which explains the sophistication Andy displays in his own songwriting and vocal delivery today. The result is a stylish but classic blend of soul, rock and tin pan alley era songwriting and lyricism envisioned through an approach that straddles both brash hip hop age production and vintage live recording techniques.
In 2004 Andy hooked up with Sydney based producer Buchman (aka Tony Buchen), began recording demos and put together a small live group of some of the most inspiring players Sydney has to offer. Both Andy and Buchman were conscious form the beginning of using players that could play nasty out-of-time hip hop beats just as well as old James Brown breaks and Ringo fills. Beginning the recording of Andy's debut album in late '06 after a short US tour, Andy has since attracted the intense interest of cutting edge performers, producers, record companies and music fans in Australia and in the US, earning props from rockers to rappers from Sydney, LA, NY, Chicago and Philly. Kanye West himself dropped into the recording sessions at Sydney's legendary Electric Avenue Studios and hung out to listen to the works in progress.
The question that continues to be asked by all who come into contact with Andy Bull is "where does that voice come from?" With 2007 promising lots of gigs, another tour to the US and finishing the recording of his debut album, the world is about to get much closer to answering that question.
"...Andy Bull commands centre stage as he coaxes his Rhodes piano, closes his eyes and continually releases a righteous voice that is dripping in blue eyed soul. The highlight of a freewheeling set is a gorgeous ballad which Andy sings accompanied only by his Rhodes and the lovelorn sighs of a sea of moist women at the front of the stage. This guy is a star in the making, if ever Ive heard one." - inthemix.com.au
"Australia's best singer/songwriter du jour... close your eyes and Bull's music oozes sex. Open them and Bull oozes self-confidence and sweat- and it has the crowd enraptured." - Three D World
"[Joss Stone's] support act for the evening, the always amorous Andy Bull, was a dynamic combination of soul and confidence. One of the most joyously received support acts that the Enmore Theatre has seen in a while, Bull proved why he's gaining a reputation for being one of the hardest working and progressive artists on the local soul circuit."- yourgigs.com.au
